Leupold Torx....wow....im disgusted.....
 

Well messing around with some of my rifles tonight. I bought a scope leveling system and was messing around seeing how close the cross hairs were....Fixed up my 30-06 and it actually worked. Decided to do it to my 22 as well and made another small adjustment to it and again seemed to make a little difference.

Pulled out the 270 and this one was off probaly the most of all the guns i was messing around with. My nephew is probaly going to use the gun this season for deer so i was loosening it up to change the eye relief for him, level the crosshairs, and bore-sight it for him to shoot over the weekend....

Back torx screws loosened right up with minimal effort...front screws another problem...I actually brokeboth of the torx wrenches that came with the scope rings and basestryin to loosen it up...They are still snug and in place with no signs of loosening...the gun, rings, scope, bullets, sling, and case all purchased at sportsmens warehouse last year...They mounted the scope andboresighted it I did all the fine tuning....havent touched the scope since.

Anyone experience this?? how did you solve it?? Im overly frustrated right now...I Just want the front rings loose...lol

Sportsmans Warehouse over tightened the screws from the beginning is my bet. Those screws only require about 15 - 20 inch pounds to be done properly and 20 inch pounds isn't much at all.

Drill off the heads with a bit just slightly larger than the torx hole in thescrewand get some new screws. Once you drill off the heads the ring top will come right off and you canthen use small pliers or small vice grips and remove the rest of the shaft of the screw.

It is possible to get torx screws crazy tight, and I much prefer that, and the torx head, to those cheezy allen heads, which ALWAYS seem to strip out before they are tight enough.

The torx "wrenches" that come with a set of rings could stand an improvement but I've found it's easier to just go to the hardware store and grab a handfull of apex bits in the proper torx size, instead of fretting and griping. I can mail you quite a collection of those broken torx "wrenches" if you like.......

Also, cracking them all a tiny bitloose equally all the way around a ring cap will limit the possibility of getting only two out and have two stuck, it's a matter of physics and how the thing went together in the first place.

Drilling the head off is pretty much the simplest way to get one out that absolutely wont budge or strips out. A solid reason to have spare screws on the bench. Once thetorque tension is released by drilling the head off the shank of the screw, itcan be often twised out with just your finger tips. Drilled out many an allen head, here, with choice words to say of it.

I've also used a soldering iron and heated the head of the screw but that is most successful when some idjit has put red or blue loctite on thethreads........

Yep and yep. Torx screws are designed so that they can be tightened very tight, allen heads are designed to prevent overtightening in the manner that they will strip out long before the shank of the screw will break- which makes them almost useless for a lof of applications.

If you have a stripped out allen head, you can usually get it out by pressing a torx screwdriver into the slot- the torx bits will fit the allen heads, even the stripped ones, and will give a strong bite on the screw.


LOL. Yep again. Purple is the way to go with scope ring screws.:D

You can cuss the torx but they are WAY better then the old flat head screw. I don't know why more scope comanies haven't gone to allen heads??

Before drilling it out I would suggest get a quality torx screwdriver, apply some heat. Give the screw a few taps with a mallet and see if it will come out. Most likely the over application of loctite when it was installed. That's why I don't use the stuff anymore.

Broke out the drill this morning and got the screws loose, then called Leupold. First timeI have evercalled them. I guess they reward stupidity cause they are going to send me a new front scope ring and screws....I suppose thats cause i have 3 of their scopes, rings, bases, and rangefinder...But even if i just had one i think they would have taken care of me. Very very nice customer service. Will buy another Leupold in the future just due to this experience.

I think in the future ill stick to mounting and sighting in my own scope...It should be close to where it was, but i suppose since moving the windage screws to get everything loose its probaly going to be terrible right to left, so im back to square 1 with this particular gun.

glad to hear that they took care of you nicely. Always great to hear customer service that really is customer service.

Secondly, I would much rather have a prolem getting a scope ring loosend than having a problem with getting it to hold tight beacuse i stripped out the allen heat orifice :)
