Hey guys,

Just wondering what you're thoughts are on the Marlin model 336W 30-30. Is it a good rifle to start out deer hunting with, if all shots are made under 100 yards? We live on wooded land for the most part, and I don't see myself making a shot much more then 50 yards, and never over 100. So... what do you say?

Also, how is the gun itself? Is it well made, or should I go with a more expensive gun, like a Remington 700 in 30-06 (I'd much rather go with a 30-30, and I'd love to get this Marlin)? Tell me what you think, please.

The Marlin .30-30 is awesome. [8D] I have an old Marlin 30AS version of the 336.
The difference in mine is just cosmetics, as I don't have the hooded front sight
and thesame style of forearm endcap. Here's mine:

I read your other post in the optics forum about scopes for the .30-30 and replied to that
as well. I had an old Glenfield 4x32 scope on my Marlin .30-30 and ended up taking it off.
The legendary, historical, old .30-30 just seems to look better without a scope. But that's
just my opinion... If you scope it, just put an very low 1-4x32 scope on it with a low set
of rings.

The .30-30 is a 50 to 100yard classic deer rifle that shines in the heavy woods and brush.
I still hunt with mine when I don't use my Savage .308 (with scope), which is setup for
longer distances. I know Hornady has the new LeverEvolution ammo, that is supposed to
be fantastic and turns the .30-30 into a 200 yard gun, but I haven't tried it yet. I wouldn't
want to try shooting 200 yards with open sights. My Marlin 30AS is setup at 50 yards with
the rear sight elevation, and that's where I leave it.

And I totally agree. The 30-30 is just not meant for a scope. I mean... it's an old western style gun!:D

The only reason I'm asking is because of the new LeverEvolution. If I get into that (and if it is all that people make it out to be), then I may need a scope on the 30-30 (when I get one, which I'm hoping will be this week). For now, though, I'll be making my shots on 20 acres of wooded property. So, I don't think I'll need a scope, and I don't think I'll need anything bigger then a 30-30.

BTW, nice looking gun.

Also, my last question is, what would you guys recommend out of a Marlin model 336W and a Marlin model 336C?

The Marlin 336 is a great first deer rifle I got one when I was 16 and it has taken its fair share of deer. Its built like a tire iron and with the Hornady Leverevolution ammo its a 250 yard rifle. I have a 270 now but still take the ole 30-30 out each season just for kicks.

Yep, it's a great rifle to start with. I started with one 47 years ago and I'm stll using it.

Well, I'll be getting one of these then. I like the 30-30, and I like Marlin. :)

Heck yeah, get one.

If it were me, I would try to pick from several in-stock guns, if possible, rather than ordering one. That way you can select the one with the best wood/metal fit, and the nicest wood.

I have a Marlin1895SS in 45/70 and I really like it.

I got a new in the box model 336W, very nice rifle if your interested and where are you from? I won it at a banquet,I have several of these rifles.
