ok. what about the model 700 SPS varmit. those have a heavy barrel. and have lots of calibers. i was thinking of .17 rem fireball or 243 or 22-250 or .204.

My buddie has one they are crap.

22 inch barrel, not much for long shots

the triangle barrel is a stupid idea, it was for weight reduction, but its not really a heavy barrel anymore

It was made to shoot 100-200 yard.
How many different types and brands of ammo has your buddy tried?

100 - 200 yards? seriously..... come on.

A 22" barrel is just fine for long shots, even 600+ yard shots and to be quite honest, the velocity loss is nothing to be worried about. You must know your bullets trajectory if you are to make precision shots regardless if that bullet leaves the barrel at 3600 fps or 3400 fps. A shorter barrel will tend to be more accurate than an equal quality barrel of a longer length because the shorter barrel is stiffer than the longer barrel.

ya i know how hot they can get. but i plan on shooting a couple thousand rounds at a time. my friend has a .223 and after around 500 rounds it starts to lose accuracy and its so hot you cant hang onto it.
Yourfriend isn't doing anything more than causing that barrel to have a very very short life span. IF you are going to be shooting that much you should be swaping between two or three rifles. You aren't going to warp the barrel or anything by doing itbut the hotter the steel gets the quicker it erodes from bullet and powder friction, both the rifleing and especially the throat of the bbl.

ya i was kinda wondering about the 100 to 200 yards because i can shoot just fine with a .22 or .17 and i think thay only have a 18'' barrel. and my 7mm has a 20'' and work fine at 200.

Let me re phrase, That rifle is pretty much made to blow someones cerebellum out at 100 yards. its a tactical Police gun. Its made to make pin point shots at close range in a urban area without itbeing to heavy and longlike mostlong range sticks are. in short its really not a practical varmit gun, (I guess that why I say it sucks, that what my buddie got it for, little bit of bias I guess).

Will it go out too 600 yards? Of course it will, it might throw a ok group.

but at200+ yardsaSP will blow that thing out of the water.

"even 600+ yard shots and to be quite honest, the velocity loss is nothing to be worried about. You must know your bullets trajectory if you are to make precision shots regardless if that bullet leaves the barrel at 3600 fps or 3400 fps"

You are spot on here, but stability of the bullet and your rifle come into play and shooting at 400 plus the slightest things dictate wether you make a dust cloud or drill that yote.

That makes a little more sense and I see better where you are coming from with your post. You gotta take things with a grain of salt in the internet. ;)

nightsniper1, the SPS varmint is a fine rifle for someone not wanting to spend a fortune on a varmint rig.
If your budget will allow you might want to look at Remingtons VLS.

Savage also makes some pretty decent predator rifles that won't break the bank. Like their 110 predator and their 12 series of rifles.

Tikka also has a varmint riflewith a decent price tag.

(Bigbull, my bad should have been a little more clear and you are very right indeed lol)

Anyhow sniper....

I assume you are looking for a good varmint rig.

The rifles BigBulls posted, can't go wrong with those,

The Savage12FV, sub MOA groups for under 600 bucks.

The mistake I see alot though is, someone will go and buy and damn good Varmint gun then they will put a bushnell banner 3x9 or some junky BSA, thats a no-go.Get a good piece of glass, I'm not saying buy a Mark IV but you can get a bushnell 4200 or Millett LRS or gold 25x without going bankrupt.

RE: remington 700 VTR

i've been looking around on the internet and found that the model 700 VTR was getting groups less than 1 inch. and the other gun i was looking at was the remington R-15 and it was getting around 1 inch.
