Need info on slug shotguns. What scope is bestto use on a 20 ga.H & R , and what ammo is best ? any experience is appreciated.

Have somewhere here a 20 gauge rifled barrel NEF, same as the H&R, that I built a custom walnut stock for, made a scope mount base"lug" which is soldered on, and have a 3X9 Leupie mounted in redfields....

It shoots the Hornady SST's wicked good.........

My 20 guage NEF loves the hornady SSTs as well. Ive got a leupold 2X7 on mine

I put a Nikon fixed 4X on my H&R USHD 12ga and I find it to be just right. Itallows for a good fieldview from very close and still have good magnification out to pretty much the effective range of the sluggun.



Edit: As far as ammo goes, I've had great luck with Winchesters "Platinum Tip" line. The 12ga is 400gr Sabot slug at 1,700fps. To me they seem to put the deer down faster than the Winchester Supreme's that are a little lighter (385grn I think)and zip out at 1,900fps. I prefer the design of the Platinum Tips and think for thinned skin game they work better.

Thanks for the info sounds like hornady is the choice for ammo, I am hunting in Va where we have no rifles allowed
so I thought I would try the slug gun

I own a H&R Ultra Deleuxe in 20ga, and I use a Hornady SST slugs, this shotgun is a tack driver!!!!!! I have a Leupod VX-II 3-9x40

I'd bet lightfields would out shoot the sst's. look into the burris FF2 http://www.burrisoptics.com/fullfield1.html#2x7xwith the ball plex (not that you really need it buts it's cool). also send your gun back to NEF and get a free trigger job.

Mine shot the SSTs better than the lightfields. The lightfields shot pretty good though.

I'd probably put a 2-7 Nikon shotgun scope on it....

I used the Lightfields for many years in my 11-87 12ga. as well as my mossberg 20ga., they did very well. But then I tried Winchester Supreme Golds out of my 11-87, better results, the Hornady SSTs out of my H&R out performed the Lightfields like it was night & day
