My Dad has a Marlin Model 60 he has had for 40 years they are great guns and very accurate. I personally prefer the Ruger 10/22. It has a reputation of being tough as nail and mine is very accurate. The marlin is tube feed and makes unloading annoying. The Ruger though has a magazine and just pops out. I have heard to many negative reviews on the Remington 597 to endorse it.

Another vote fot the 10/22, I have a total of 5 22's and when it comes time to shoot I seem to always grab the 10/22. I normally prefer the bolts to the semi's but not in this case....Another thing about the 10/22 is that the possibilities are endless with them...I started with a plain jane 22 and it turned out being a 100yd tack driver and looks killer too!!!!!

I've got the Marlin 60. Great rifle. It will eat anything I feed it. It does get pretty dirty but not bad to clean. As far as unloading the tube, just pull the inner tube (plunger) and tip muzzle down. Clear the action and your good to go. The only problem is getting it away from the wife so I can shoot it. Had it for 20 years now.

If you don't have a 10/22, it should be the one you buy first. They are a great little gun, and you can customize them a million different ways, but they work just fine right out of the box. If you plan on having it in the truck allot get a stainless to reduce the chance of it rusting, though if neglected stainlessis not rust proof. If you want a bolt action take a look at the CZ's. If money is a concern, look around pawn shops, I have an old single shot 22lr that I picked up for 60 bucks that is absolutly deadly with its open sights, and it doesn't eat the ammo as quickly as my 10/22 when we are setting around camp plinking.

Also check out the 22's at rimfirecentral.com. I have a Remington552 Speedmaster22 (great 22) and a Marlin 39A Golden lever action. Look around for a 39A, they are a awesome 22. I also have a Remington 597 in 17HMR and haven't had any problems with it. I think some of the 22 597's had some problems with the magazines....can't remember?? Lots of info on the 597 at that web site though.
