My Dad has a Marlin Model 60 he has had for 40 years they are great guns and very accurate. I personally prefer the Ruger 10/22. It has a reputation of being tough as nail and mine is very accurate. The marlin is tube feed and makes unloading annoying. The Ruger though has a magazine and just pops out. I have heard to many negative reviews on the Remington 597 to endorse it.

Another vote fot the 10/22, I have a total of 5 22's and when it comes time to shoot I seem to always grab the 10/22. I normally prefer the bolts to the semi's but not in this case....Another thing about the 10/22 is that the possibilities are endless with them...I started with a plain jane 22 and it turned out being a 100yd tack driver and looks killer too!!!!!

I've got the Marlin 60. Great rifle. It will eat anything I feed it. It does get pretty dirty but not bad to clean. As far as unloading the tube, just pull the inner tube (plunger) and tip muzzle down. Clear the action and your good to go. The only problem is getting it away from the wife so I can shoot it. Had it for 20 years now.

If you don't have a 10/22, it should be the one you buy first. They are a great little gun, and you can customize them a million different ways, but they work just fine right out of the box. If you plan on having it in the truck allot get a stainless to reduce the chance of it rusting, though if neglected stainlessis not rust proof. If you want a bolt action take a look at the CZ's. If money is a concern, look around pawn shops, I have an old single shot 22lr that I picked up for 60 bucks that is absolutly deadly with its open sights, and it doesn't eat the ammo as quickly as my 10/22 when we are setting around camp plinking.

Also check out the 22's at rimfirecentral.com. I have a Remington552 Speedmaster22 (great 22) and a Marlin 39A Golden lever action. Look around for a 39A, they are a awesome 22. I also have a Remington 597 in 17HMR and haven't had any problems with it. I think some of the 22 597's had some problems with the magazines....can't remember?? Lots of info on the 597 at that web site though.

The Savage Mark IIis heavy at 7 1/4 pounds, a plastic trigger guard, not many mods can be done to them unlike the Ruger. The bolt action is good for a kid just learning to shoot. The Remington 597, well enough has been said about its problems. Marlin model 60 great all around reliable shooter. Best bang for the buck is the Ruger 10/22!

Just wondering,Do you want a semi? Bolt? Paper puncher? Hunter? All of the above?what is your budget?As said above everybody should have at least one 10/22.The remmie Speedmasters are hard to beat, Browning semi ? What can I say all time classic and favorite.Bolts? How about a Anschutz If you are looking for just a good paper puncher I have a Remington 540X I might part with.It is a single shot,Looks like something they use in a Biathalon(sp.)If on a tight budget look around for an old bolt action .You can get older Remington bolts for anywhere from $75.00 to "You have got to be kidding me" :Drimfire central is a good source of information JMHO

The 10/22s nowhave plastic trigger guards as well, FWIW.

If you want accurate for under $500, get a older remington 513,540-series, 580 series, or Mossberg bolt action. If money is no object, a Winchester 52 or Anschutz is king. For a semiauto, the 10/22 can either be the best plinker or the biggest money-pit depending on what you want to use it for. The Marlin 60 is a great gun, as for the remington 597- been there, done that, got the t-shirt to prove it, and will probably never buy another new remington product because of it[:@]

RE: new 22

wow i didint know the 597 were that bad

I probably got a lemon of a rifle, mine wouldn't fire through an entire magazine without a jam, nomatter what ammo I used. Ibought one o fhte earlier ones when they first came out. A lot of people these days seem to do well with them, but I feel like I got a rifle that Remington was 'beta testing' on consumers rather than working out the problems before it hit the market. My experience with it was enough to sour me on 597s and remington in general ever since.

Edit: a friend of mine just picked up a 597 as his first .22 rifle against my advice last week. He really likes its accuracy, but he also said that at least he's getting a lot of practice at clearing FTF jams.

what are FTF jams?

Briman 06-03-2008 10:05 PM

FTF= failure to feed
FTE= failure to eject

RE: new 22

Look at the T/C R55, I've got the benchmark and have been really pleased with it's accuracy out of the box and no problems so far. Needs some trigger work though[:'(] First time at the range with Eley ammo on a windy day and I was able to get thesekind of ten shot groups, off a sandbag,on a consistent basis at 50 yards. I think they will shrink a bit when I get the trigger worked over andgo to the range ona day when the wind isn't gusting 15-20 mph...

marlins are renowned for rimfire. there's a reason for that. i've been shooting my dad's old marlin golden 39A and i recently put a 4x scope on it and it's still going strong. the ruger 10/22 is a very nice semi as the others have said.if you're looking for speed. (follow-up shots, loading, ) that's an excellent rifle to look at

I got a pretty good deal on mine, I paid$389. I think most of them go around $425 or so. But, by the time I figured adding a heavy barrel and new stock to a 10/22 I figure it wasn't too bad.

I wondered about the TC, thats good to knowand that is a good looking rifle. You are right about the 10/22 I don't have but 300-400 in mine but I didn't buy the gun, my dad bought it for me years ago when I was a kid. I just have money in the upgrades....
It is a fun little gun and suprisingly accurate (with the upgrades) @100ydsfor a .22 and a auto at that.
