You could do much worse for your first hunting shotgun. It is a tried and true design not particularly fancy but used by millions for many hunting purposes. Lots of accessories available after-market including many specialty barrels and such. Here's a link from Remington about one of it's main products.

You will love the 870. I have both the Express and the Wingmaster. I've harvested more birds than I would be able to cound with my Express. Very reliable gun. You should say many thank yous for such a nice hand me down.

Remington is running ads right now saying "Right now somewhere some one is hunting with a Remington 870" and that's the truth. There are so many out there and they are so good and reliable that at any given time some one is carring one and hunting with one. You may get another shotgun one day but becasue you want on not because you need one.

The best shotgun I've ever had. I've never had any problems out of mine. One time when I was duck huntin, I accidently dropped that sucker in pluff mud. No problem, I pulled it out of the mud and washed it off in the river. Good as new. I wouldn't try that with my 11-87.

Like most others, I've got an 870. Great gun. It's a rule to have one. I actually prefer the finish of the 870 express for turkeys because it's not shiny and has less a chance to scare a turkeywith glare compared to a wingmaster. My latest 870 came with the wood stock, I took the wood off, bought a synthetic and am having it coated with MAX-1. Can't wait till I get the stock and forend back. It's a lefty.
