Which do you like? I only like the hinged floor plate

I prefer the built-in, Mauser-type staggered box magazine with or without a hinge. Detachable box magazines are too easy to drop, loose, or misplace. Beside, I don't like anything that projects down past the bottom of the stock in front of the trigger guard. Messes up one-hand holding.....

I like the detachable magazine from my Sako’s. A snap to remove and slap into place and flush with the stock. Nothing in the way. Just the way I like it...;)

I also prefer the DM option on Sako's (mine is a 75 BTW).

I don't like detachable magazines, either a floor plate or blind box magazine for me. And I'd honestly be happy if it only held three rounds. Shell capacity on a rifle has never been an issue for me. In most cases I either hit what I am aiming at or I don't. If I didn't connect on the first shot I highly doubt I will on the next three or four when I'm rushed.

If it is a quality unit SAKO then i prefer it to any hinged floorplate. Try one out sometime with the box out or in one of the smoothest loading rifles made. Now the Tikka is a mess and protrudes out the bottom I have no use for that.

I like the the removeable magazine of the Sako M75 but it does have the problem of accidently falling out if the latch is struck inadvertantly. Sakosolved that problem in the newer 85 model byhaving to depress the magazine and then the latch to remove it and it works great. They have a very positive feed and are one of the few that cycle the WSM's without a hitch.

it depends on the gun. for my mossberg 385-T i'd rather have a hinge but on my SKS it's more fun to have a detachable

I hate detachable box magazines...

They are easy to lose ( yeah, I know, I can buy an EXTRA, but why should I have to..??..)...

IMHO, they much less asthetically pleasing to the eye...

With an integral staggered box mag, EVERYTHING is there...Floorplate is a nice feature, but not required.. A blind box mag is still much superior to a detachable BM, in my opinion...

When I bought my Rem 700 Mountain Rifle in 7MM08, they had just switched to DMs... Damn thing has been nothing but trouble..Does not feed reliably, one day I hunted with a single shot because I misplaced the damn thing, yada, yada... All of this could be avoided and the rifle would be more attractive with a simple hinged floorplate...

Me either. That's why I use Ruger No. 1's. No controversy over magazines with one of these......

I would love to get a ruger #1, such a pretty weapon in my opinion. I don't see me ever being to afford one though.

Since I live in southern Michigan most of my hunting is done with either single shots like muzzle loaders or break action shotguns so shell capacity never really bothered me.

I also have the problem with the extended magazines because I tend to hold the gun closer to the trigger guard than most and the mag normally gets in my way. Maybe because I have short arms?

The hinged floor plates are nice for unloading and cleaning though I guess. I've only ever owned one gun that had that feature though.

Even my SKS didn't have detachable mags, just stripper clips.

Hinged floor plate for myself. Good luck.

You know I was discussing the 85 vs 75 the other day with one of NC's biggest beretta dealers and he told me that the only improvement he saw between the 2 was the stock. It's a marketing ploy as is the CRFI don't know of anyone that has ever dropped a magazine out of a 75 intentionally.

I have both and don't really have a favorite. As for the people that lose your magazines, how do you ever keep track of your truck keys, wallet, or hunting licence?

+1 never really understood the potential of losing the mag debate:eek:?? I started on 760 or 7600 rifle that have a horrible DM design (IMHO) and still never lost one. Though I have misplaced my keys, wallet, etc but never a magazine...lol:D

I believe that because I’ve never had a problem with magazine’s on my 75’s. They’ve always stayed in place until I released them...

I have never accidentially dropped the DM out of my Sako 75. Guess some folks must have or it wouldn't have been re-designed.

I have a couple of M75's and I can say from experince that the one chambered in 375 H&H has dropped it's magazine from recoil alone.

Double A, This is the first time I’ve ever heard of someone with personal experience with the magazine problem. I guess my Sakos are just pop guns compared to that 375 H&H canon...:D

Trailer, even with my problems with the 375, I love the set up that Sako uses, it's very sleek, ann at a glance it looks like a regular floorplate. As BugsnBows stated, it's probably happened to others also and that led them (Sako) to to come out withthe updated design used in the M85's.

I love my Sako's and just ordered a TRG 22 in 308 Win. ( these use a completely different magazine design)

That may explain why they made a limited edition CRF with a hinged floorplate for the V series actions that was chambered in 375. It was also pretty common to find a hinged floorplate along with a DM when finding a 5 Action and I believe if not mistaken that the RUMs came with hinged floorplates. The Biggest Sako action I owned was a 5 in STW and I never fired it. It came with a DM.

CLIPS ALL THE WAY
A clip refers to a stripper clip used in military rifles and not a magazine that is detachable.

I prefet a DM myself.

I owned a Tikka for a good part of 5 years, and never had a single issue with its mag.

I've owned a Browning A-Bolt for 13 years, and its never let me down yet.

I have a few bolt guns with blind box magazines, I hate them. My fingers don't like jamming shells in them, and unloading them is a chore.

I own a few bolt guns with floor plates, and still don't like to load them, but unloading is real easy. ;)

When shopping for a firearm, I want a DM First, and a hinged floorplate second.

RE: removable box magazine or hinged floor plate

For a bolt gun and hunting I prefer a hinged floor plate. A magazine is fin as long as it’s well thought out and made well. The Sako 85’s is made harder to remove than the 75. They must have seen a need for the design change. The Steyr Mannlicher design needs to have both sides pinched to remove. While this reduces the chance of it falling out accidentally the still can be changed quickly. They are also flush with the stock and are clearly marked with the caliber on the bottom. Like other magazines they can be taken out and forgotten or lost and add a little more complexity to the gun.

You know I was discussing the 85 vs 75 the other day with one of NC's biggest beretta dealers and he told me that the only improvement he saw between the 2 was the stock.

Their synthetic stock is a step backwards as far as I’m concerned.
