I'm a Springfield XD guy myself. More money than you are talking, but it'd be worth saving up the extra cash.

If you just want a plinker, definately get a 9mm, b/c like you said ammo costs will be lower. But, i would plan on getting a dependable 40cal(or larger) if you plan to carry it for pers. def.
I carry a Sig 229 (40cal)on duty and a glock 23 or a S&W 642 rev.(38 +P) off duty.
You can get by with a 9mm for all of it. but I live by the motto: "
