If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

Would like to know what is your favorite caliber if you could just have one. I am looking at buying either a 30/06 or maybe a 7 mm. Could you compare the 2? They are used guns at a gun dealer, are there any specific things i should look at on these guns? Thank you

Of the two mentioned I would choose the 7mm rem mag.It will take any game that the 30-06 will but shoots flatter.

The 30-06 will do it all...;)

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

for me it would be the 3006 but i hunt in PA..deer bodys arent massive and shots arent far..biggest game i might take would be a black bear but it would be nothing for a 3006 either...i dont need a magnum..now if your shooting past 300yds id go with the 7mm...

I have onle 1 big game rifle----Remington 700---30/06. It has done everything I' ve asked of it. Never had a problem with elk, bighorn sheep, mtn goat, mulies, antelope, black bear, mtn lion & wild boar. I' ve also got a good piece of glass-----Leupold Var X-III in 2.5 X 8. Good luck !!

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

I have owed both. I use the 7 mag mm, so that is my answer. Like Stubblejumper said it does all the 06 will do but shoots flatter. The 06 does everything, but really not one thing outstanding IMO. They both will kill game you encounter, though.

" If I could have only one gun" (what a nightmare that is) it would be " EEA/Bakail IZH94 Combo Gun.

Made by " European American Armory it features a 3-inch mag. 12-gauge barrel over a rifle barrel avalible in : 222, .223, .308, .30/06 and a variety of " european calibers" . 24 or 26 inch barrels, it weighs about 7.28 lbs. and costs about $499.

I just saw the write up on this gun in Petersen' s Hunting awhile back and it is the kind of (affordable) combo I have been looking for.

I don' t know which " european cartridges it comes in but there are some that are very similar to the 7mm rem. mag.

Robin.

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

If I could only have one I would probably keep my Rem 700 LSS in 7mm Rem Mag. with a Nikon Monarch 3x-9x scope on top.

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

Only one? I' d have to keep my Steyr Mannlicher 1903 in 7 X 57 with iron express sights. It was my first rifle, bought it myself when I was 14. Worked my ass off for 6 weeks to save the $76.00 it cost me to buy the used rifle in 1966. It' s action is as smooth as glass, no exaggeration, and the rotary magazine is a slick trick. I have rifles that are in calibers that are slightly more versatile, but that rifle was my first...............so if I could only keep one it would have to be the Steyr.

300 Wby. Mag. Mark V Accumark , or 30-378 Wby. Mag. Mark V Accumark. Good luck.

First thing I would check the condition of the guns, how the action feels ,who manufactured them and what is the asking price . How does the cost compare with buying a new rifle . Either one will work so the condition and price would be my concern if I just wanted a good rifle.

depending if your shots will be over 200yds. if not 30-06sprg if over 200yds i would go with the 7mm rem mag.

[:@] I can' t even think that way! but if for some reason I could only have one gun it would be my Marlin 1895G. 45-70. that would be the one they pry out of my dead grip!

If you have to shoot more than 200yds, you probably smell bad!

.223 Big enough to kill anything you want to kill, yet small enought not ruin any pelts, or tear up any meat

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

I only owned one rifle and it is a 7mm rem mag (Win model 70 classic S.S). The .30-06 is a good choice but, if you plan to hunt antelope and take other longer shots at smaller game over 250 yards plus, it is not quite as flat shooting as others have mention. That not with standing the .30-06 might be a better choice.

.223 ??? That caliber is not legal in Colorado for any big game.

BigEd 02-17-2003 11:15 PM

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

If this is going to be your first rifle or at least your first centerfire,
I' d go with the ' 06.
It may not be as flat a shooting round as the 7mm mag but the rounds will cost you a little less so you can get in more pre-deer season practice.
And, if you reload or plan on doing so the ' 06 will also be a bit cheaper to reload for too.

As for what to look for on the two guns check the muzzle crown for any obvious dings or odd wear, inspect the stock for cracks and for any lossness of fit between it and the action.
Also look at the screw heads on the action screws to see if the slots are marred. This is an indicator the someone may have been monkeying with the trigger or action.

[:o]If I could keep only one of my rifles it would be my Marlin 336CS in 35 Rem topped of with an Aetec. It has never let me down in any way. If I drop the scope on something you better belive it' s gonna go down!:D

It would be a 270 win. Zeak

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

Between those two calibers I would have to take the 7mm Rem. Mag. But, I' ll take my 338 Win. Mag. over the other two, just because it smacks game with authority and it' s a superior cartridge.

Hi would choose a 25-06. yeah that.[&o][:-]

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

Between the 30-06 and 7mm Rem Mag, I would have to go with the 7mm. The 7mm is flatter shooting much better for longer shots. I like my 270 and put it very close to the 30-06.Either you choose would be a good choice. You have more choices with different weights and types of bullets using the 30-06.
Ruger Redhawk

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

Between the two you listed, The 30-06 without question But if I could only keep one rifle it would be my Rem 700 22-250. Its Legal for Big Game where I live and although it is not my first choice for Deer, I don,t think I could do without it. A second choice but still keeping only one ? 6.5x55 mauser.

RE: If you could have only one rifle, what would it be

i myself would choose the 06 , they will almost do the same job , the only real difference is the 7 mag has a better trajectory , and further range in accuracy , the shells also cost more and the rifle has more kick to it , if you live in a wooded area and hunt there then the advantages the 7 mag has don' t really come into play that much.

i myself would choose a .35 whelen , better expantion , capable of taking any north american big game , and for me there' s just something about that .35 calibre that i really like :D:D:D
