Would like to know what is your favorite caliber if you could just have one. I am looking at buying either a 30/06 or maybe a 7 mm. Could you compare the 2? They are used guns at a gun dealer, are there any specific things i should look at on these guns? Thank you

for me it would be the 3006 but i hunt in PA..deer bodys arent massive and shots arent far..biggest game i might take would be a black bear but it would be nothing for a 3006 either...i dont need a magnum..now if your shooting past 300yds id go with the 7mm...

I have onle 1 big game rifle----Remington 700---30/06. It has done everything I' ve asked of it. Never had a problem with elk, bighorn sheep, mtn goat, mulies, antelope, black bear, mtn lion & wild boar. I' ve also got a good piece of glass-----Leupold Var X-III in 2.5 X 8. Good luck !!

I have owed both. I use the 7 mag mm, so that is my answer. Like Stubblejumper said it does all the 06 will do but shoots flatter. The 06 does everything, but really not one thing outstanding IMO. They both will kill game you encounter, though.

" If I could have only one gun" (what a nightmare that is) it would be " EEA/Bakail IZH94 Combo Gun.
Made by " European American Armory it features a 3-inch mag. 12-gauge barrel over a rifle barrel avalible in : 222, .223, .308, .30/06 and a variety of " european calibers" . 24 or 26 inch barrels, it weighs about 7.28 lbs. and costs about $499.

I just saw the write up on this gun in Petersen' s Hunting awhile back and it is the kind of (affordable) combo I have been looking for.
I don' t know which " european cartridges it comes in but there are some that are very similar to the 7mm rem. mag.

Only one? I' d have to keep my Steyr Mannlicher 1903 in 7 X 57 with iron express sights. It was my first rifle, bought it myself when I was 14. Worked my ass off for 6 weeks to save the $76.00 it cost me to buy the used rifle in 1966. It' s action is as smooth as glass, no exaggeration, and the rotary magazine is a slick trick. I have rifles that are in calibers that are slightly more versatile, but that rifle was my first...............so if I could only keep one it would have to be the Steyr.
