i already have a 300winmag and would like something that would be fun to shot at the target-range and work well on deer even at 250-300yards. is the 308.win capable of this? thanks for any replies.

.308 is perfectly capable, but so is 7mm-08, 260 rem, 6.5x55, 257 Roberts, and 25-06. Not to mention about alot of other sub 30-06 cartridges that will work well.

Yeah the 308 will do what you want but so would a 260rem or 7mm-08 & they would be both a little bit more comfortable to shoot at the range.
My rifle has just arrived, its a tikka continental(heavy barrel)that I intend to use for silhouette target shooting which involves knocking over 75 pound metal targets at 500 yards,so it would definately be very capeable of taking deer out to 300 yards.
The 260 & 7mm-08 use a 308 case,necked down to 7mm & 6.5mm for the 260.
Good luck

I shoot the .308 Winchester, but if I were buying a new "deer only" rifle it would be the 7MM-08.It will take down any whitetail on the planet, out to ranges that most people should not be shooting at! It is a good, hard hitter! On the down range side that is, recoil is light!

My poor 300 Win Mag has dust on it because I hunted exclusively with a 7mm-08 Rem this season. Recoil is light and ballistics are great. I was very impressed with the down range performance. It will be my "go to" deer rifle from now on.
