And why is there no .277-08?
Isn't this the 7mm-08?
7mm-08 is .284-08

.270-08 would be a .277-08

The .358 win in a short actioned bolt or lever gun makes an excellent eastern deer/bear/moose round. Its killing power is way underrated and over looked.

The .280 Remington. It got snuffed out by the .270 in marketing and the praises of Jack O'Conner.
Ditto!!!!!!!!!!

No, the 7mm bullet diameter is .284" and the .270 bullet diameter is .277".
Yep. A significant thickness of two sheets of notenbook paper's difference in diameter.

Actually, the .280 was snuffed out by the .270 WAY BEFORE the .280 ever became a factory load over here (Krauts had the 7X64mm)-it was introduced about 40 years too late!

As I under standstandard 170gr 30-30 loads out of a 20" barrel only go 2000-2200fps. Now compare that standrad 200gr 35 rem loads ranged from 2000 to 2200fps. So the velcities are comparablebut there is no comparisonto the larger heavier 358 cals on game preformance. Yet die hard 30-30 lovers "great as it is" still sware there is no differance or worse think the 30-30 is better.

Now the saam spec's keep dropping so new standard pressure 35rem and 30-30ammo is getting wimpy, but my 200gr @ 2200fps hand loads will still out perform any 30-30 hand load.

As I recall ( i think) when remington started marketing the 280 they thought it would be a great round for their 742auto and 760pump. The initial rounds led to some problems with chambering and ejecting in the 760. This led remington to lower the powder charge in the 280, this was a real turnoff to some shooters. Since the 270 prided itself in high velocity the 280 was doomed. Jim Carmiceahl wrote a great article about the 280 back in the 70's he like the round and took several trophies with it.

I wholeheartedly agree about the excellent extinct 5mm remington magnum.
