Thats good. I've always hunted with a 30-06 but just thought about the mauser.

I've got two one of them is a howa action rebarreled with a shaw barrel, the other is a turk K.Kale action rebarrelled with a wilson barrel. If the 7-08 is a good cartidge then the 7 x 57 is good also, ballistically they are close to the same, depends on which reloading manual you are looking at. Both mine prefer the 150 gr bullets. But I prefer a bullet with a little more weight so I play with powder and loads until I get something to work for me. Neither wants to do well with the 170s. They are wicked on yotes, haven't shot a deer with one, it's on my to do list

The old 7mm Mauser is an excellent deer cartridge, about equal with the 7mm-08

I'll have to try it next season considering today is the last day. Thanks for the replies and I'll put it to good use.

The 7X57mm is an excellent cartridge for all North American hunting except the huge bears up north. In addition, it is more than adequate for all African hunting except for elephant, rhino, Cape Buffalo and lion......

I agree, but with solids and in the hands of an experienced African hunter, it has performed these tasks... not the perfect pill for the stated job at hand, but has performed this job WITH SOLIDS

Agreed, there are way better choices for the big jobs..that said, it is a superb hunting round, for a multitude of jobs ......

You are correct, and I note that Bell used solids in his ".275 Rigby Mauser" for EVERYTHING he shot with it, includingsmall plains game he shot for the pot. He had at least one rifle that he boasted "had never been contaminated by firing a soft-point bullet"!
