Scope and Mount Suggestions

I'm looking for a fixed power scope 2x or 4x for a Marlin guide gun 1895gs in 45-70 gov. I don't want to spend more than $175 out the door for it. Any suggestions on brands and models that I should look at?

Also I'd like to have a two piece scope mount but leupold doesn't make a two piece for the Marlin guide gun. What other companies out there make a quality set of mounts and rings?

Thanks

Tom

As far as fixed scopes I admit to beingout of the loop in regards to todays offerings. However I still own 2 fixed 4x's that have been rock solid and a search on ebay may turn up something for you.One is a redfield wide angle 4x that I got with my first rifle and the secondthe first Leupold I bought - M8 4x.

As far as mounts Warne Maxima 2 piece bases and Quick Release rings would be a good fit. If not interested in quick release Warne also offer fixed maxima rings. I own/use boththe QR and fixed warnes, theyhave been rock solid.

RE: Scope and Mount Suggestions

Skeeter,

Thanks for the tip on the rings and mounts. I'm going to give them a call later today to see where they are priced.

I've looked at the Leopuld FXII and everything is right except for the price and I would like another inch of eye relief. The scope has 4". I could easily see getting hit with it with a peppy load in the .45-70. Do you guys know of any other makers that make quality fixed power scope?

Also I noticed that the bells on the fixed power scopes are smaller. The Leupold is the biggest I've seen at 33mm. Anyone know why they make the bell smaller on the fixed power scopes? Why not keep it at 40mm to collect more light?

Thanks

Tom

I'm discovering that shotgun scopes tend to be cheaper and offer more eye relief. Is there any reason I wouldn't want to use a shotgun scope?

Thanks

Check into the Weaver K series. A 4 X 38 for about $125 @ SWFA should do the trick. With an exit pupil of 9.5 (it's more than the eye can "use"), wide field of view, and eye relief of about 3.25 inches you'll not have any issues.

I prefer the Warne one piece base. It will give you a lot more adjustment(top in photo). I do not like the 2 piece bases, they do not give a lot of adjustment. And remember that fixed power scopes are shorter.

I would avoid any scope that has friction adjustments. Especially for a big bore rifle. Tom.

Tom,

How do I know if a scope has friction adjustments?

RE: Scope and Mount Suggestions

Normally the easiest way to tell is if there are audible clicks when you adjust the scope. Friction adjustment scopes are normally inaudible. Did you ever hear of someone "slapping" their scope with their wallet?? They do this to seat the crosshair in the friction adjustment scope. Positive click adjustment moves the crosshairs the exact same amount with every click. Or otherwise known as "Repeatability".

This is a well kept secret in the scope world. It is much cheaper to build a friction adjustment scope. Some cheap scope mfrs. have even went so far as to add a "clicker" to their adjustment rings, but still have friction type adjustment. Tom.

IMO the Bushnell Elite(3200) is the lowest price scope-of the top end scopes.

Bushnell 2-7x32 Elite 3200 Rifle Scope

SWFA:
$174.95[/b]

I just got this information from the SWFA web site. This would make a great scope for the rifle you are describing. If $175 is your top end. Tom.

Tom,

Do you know which manufacturers use the friction type adjustment? I've really only owned Leupolds, Simmons Aetecs and some old tascos.

RE: Scope and Mount Suggestions

Leupold makes several scopes that have friction adjustments. Or should I say Leupold has them made. The type of erector system is not subject to brand, it is subject to quality of build. Tom.

Tom,
I have an 1895G with a scout set up on it because occaisionally I will hunt dangerous game with it. That set up is a little more than 200.00 and is not what most people use on there Guide gun. I like Leupold because of the warrany and never have had a problem with one. I'm not sure what you are hunting with this gun, but don't discount a variable. Like someone mentioned, a 2-7X33 works great on these guns. Leupold makes a shotgun scope for under 200.00 with a heavy rectical that would work great. This gun is accurate out to 175 yards and I'm not sure a 2x would be large enough if you are going use it on say like deer at that distance. It's pretty much a personal preference thing and how good your eye sight is.

Parallax settingcan be> 100 yards. However in recent years with inline ML's popularity manufacturers havebeen listing them as shotgun/ml scopes. In turn the parallax settings are changing, sometimes a 100 yards just like rifle scopes, while some that still 50 and 75 settings. TDS's on the manufacturers website should give all the specs you need, such as ER, weight, length, FOV, Parallax, etc.Should also mention if theyare friction or click adjustments.

If you consider going with a 2x7 variable choice within your budget may opento include the 3200, burris FFII, etc. However more then 4" ER desired will widdle it back down some(neitherafford over 4" of ER)[&:].

As far as objective size whileI personally like 4xmm objectivefor FOV reasonsthe actual useable light transmission in an apples to apples comparison of similar optics in 32xand 40xisn't as much as some may think. No doubt to my eye the image is brighter however my Leupold M8 with a 3xmm objective never haulted me from shootingin low light conditions either.
Coatings and glass used have far more to do with light transmission then the size of the bell on the end. The human eye can only except so much light, 2-7mm. If the scope transmits more then your eye can take...it isbasically useless. The best advice I can give you is let your eyes do the talking. Head to your local shops and do some side x sides in both high and low lighting conditions.

Best of luck

RE: Scope and Mount Suggestions

I went to a sporting goods store last night. I examined the Nikon Prostaff $129 vs the Leupold VX I $219. Before conducting the test I was figuring that the Leupold was going to be better so I was biased going in. (Eventhough all my Aetec's kick my Leupolds butts). Well without a doubt the Nikon was much better than the Leupold. Not just slightly, by a large margin. I even tested them both in thier stock room with lights off looking at an archery target about 20-25 yards away. The sales guy conducted the same tests that I did and his conclusion was the same as well.

I'm thinking less and less of Leupold every day. They are off my list.

I may end up with the Nikon but not sure yet. Can't beat the price that's for sure. I'm going to check the Nikon website to see if it's click or friction like Tom suggested.

RE: Scope and Mount Suggestions

Ok I'm a little closer to figuring out what I want.

I did end up getting the Warnes scope mounts. I got the two piece mount, just not a fan of the one piece never have been, and the quick release rings so I can still use my iron sights.

As for the scope I'm going to go low variable as opposed to fixed. Probably something like 2-7. I also want the scope to be set at 100 yards parrelax. The scope needs to have a minum of 3.7" of eye relief. Any other suggestions on the scope?

Tom,

The Bushnell Elite 3200 friction or click. I noticed thier website never says they are click adjustment. Just said there is an audible click. Strange the it never says click adjustment on it's own. This scope is out of the running because of the eye relief. I'm just curious about the click vs friction.

Thanks

Tom

Stat, look at the Browning scopes Natchez has out there ..they are a combo of 3200 and 4200 elites.

RE: Scope and Mount Suggestions

statjunk, the 3200is click adjustments not friction(well at least all the ones I have owned and played with). Nikon as well uses click adjustments on the pro-staff, buckmaster, monarch, etc. Used to be the Vari X I was friction but I am sureI remember theychangedto clickwhen it went from vari x to vx branding. The Leupold Rifleman is friction.

Not suprisedto hearyourimpressions with Leupold, a number of long time gold ring fans feel the same way. At present I'd be hard pressed tobuy any newoptic from leupold, wasn't that many years ago they were the standard for which I would judge others[:o]. It's not that make a bad product, its just the competition has got better while leupold has stood still...to bad really.

Good luck

No quams here.I mentioned theM8 on page 1 of this post, it's been a workhorse/great scope. I hold my Vari XIII's in the same class as the M8, both have served me very well.Personally these are the scopes that made me support leupold, so I have no problems buying or recommending either of these 2 models.

Well this is what I ended up going with. I'm doing the Tasco roulette. I've actually had a tasco that was built years ago that I bought directly right form the factory. Never had a problem with it.

I'm giving them another shot.

Thanks for all the tips.
