Rifle for my G/F
Hey Everyone,
My girlfriend wants to come hunting with me but i dont have a rifle or shotgun she can shoot comfortably. I have a 22 Mag she can use for squirrels and plan on getting a Remington 870 20 gauge combo for most other things. But i do hunt some places where i can use a rifle. I was wanting to get a levergun in 45-70 but since she wants to hunt i was thingin about a 30-30. Ive never shot a 30-30 so what is the recoil comparable to? She had a bad experience with guns when she was younger so im trying to keep the recoil very low for her. I know some people on ehre are going to have something tosay about getting guns for her but they are not being bought for her. They are going to be my guns but she will be allowed to use them for hunting until she can afford her own guns. Thanks for everyones help.

A .30-30 doesn't kick much-11.5 foot-pounds if it weighs 6.5 pounds and is used with 150-grain bullets. That's about half the recoil of a .30/'06. But the SHAPE of the stock of some .30-30's slapsyour cheekbone when you shoot, and that hurts! I would recommend a .243, 6mm Remington, .257 Roberts,a .260 Remington or a 7mm/'08. Take a look at a Model 7 Remington in one of these calibers.

Has she done any shooting? What calibers has she fired? How did she react? MAKE SURE she uses real good ear protection! Sometimes the SOUND of the shot is more disconcerting than the felt recoil.

She has been shooting with me all last year. She has shot a 22 Mag, 17 HMR, 223, and a 204 Ruger. I already told her she cant come deer huntign with me until i feel she shoots good enough to kill a deer with 1 shot. I want her to shoot atleast 3in groups at 100 yards with the deer rifle to go deer hunting with me. She shoots around 2in with the 204, 3.5in with the 223 and 17 HMR, and 4-5in with the 22 Mag all at 100 yards. Her bad experience was with her dad a few years ago. They were shooting clays andthe single shot 12 gauge was too much for her.

If you want a lever gun for her, a Savage Model 99 in 250/3000 is a sweet one she could handle. Very low recoil. But what's wrong with the 223 she is already shooting? Or are they not legal for deer in PA? Many states they are both legal and very effective. 30/30s have a surprising amount of recoil and if they don't fit you right it's worse. On paper it may be half of a 30/06 but the rifles are normally a pound or two lighter and stocked rather poorly.
