scope will not stay zeroed

My scope, after just a little contact (a bump against my back, against my knee when I place it in my lap, etc.) is knocked off zero about two inches at 100 yards. Is this something I just need to learn to live with and be a lot more gentle with my rifle or is this a problem with thescope or mounting? I try to be very gentle with myrifle and think that I am and am surprised that such minor contact results in sucha change in zero. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

This situation is not acceptable!!!!!!!!!

Depending on the make and model of the scope, the manufacturer may repair/replace a scope in this condition. Contact the manufacturer. If they will not assist you, don't EVER buy one of thier scopes again.

With scopes, you usually get what you pay for; in quality and manufacturer support.

a simple bump shouldnt throw a scope off like . i would check over all the screws and mounts. if thats good then maybe send the scope back to the company for a look at. you could also have issues with fouling your barrel or pinch points in the stock that are working against you keeping a good group. did you have consistant groups all along? maybe shoot a couple and then give the scope a gentle bump with your hand. if it is thast bump sensative you need to have the scope fixed. also if you have another scope maybe mount that up and see if its the gun that has issues.

I agree with Caribou, try to contact the manufacturer for repairs or save your pennies and purchase a new scope. You do get what you pay for in scopes.

this is true to a point. there are many budget scopes that perform well. the bushnell banner and trophy series is one i know of from experience. i bet many mass produced scopes come out of the same factories using similar parts.

RE: scope will not stay zeroed

I have many scopes from Leupold, Nikon, Weaver, and others. I expect a scope manufacturer to stand behind thier product. That is part of my concideration when making a scope purchase. If I am purchasing a scope that does not carry a lifetime warranty, then I know I am buying a "budget" scope. But, if I have a few bucksextra and I know I'm going to hold onto that scope (which I generally do), then I'll move up a price point and get same quality or better and the warranty. It gives me long term peace of mind.

This is just my personal justification when making a purchase. I also have a couple of "budget" scopes in the safe.

NC, you can't hunt with a scope you can't trust. Something is screwy in the scope or mounting. If you can't fix it, you gotta pitch it and start over. Start with your mounts first. When asking for tech advice it always helps to give specifics as to make, product age, etc.

It is a Bushnell Legend I bought this year. I think the mounts are Bushnell as well. I have checked the screws and mounts and am shooting tight groups with the rifle. What type of abuse should I expect a scope to take before it is thrown off? I thought it was me but the moreI read the more more angry I am getting. I missed a deer this year with it.

You sure do:DI've had nothing but bushnell trophy scopes on every gun I own... I bought a Browning Stainless Stalker and decided to put a better scope on it... So I bought a Leoupold... Couldn't get that thing to hit the same spot twice:(Decided it was the scope and went out and bought a Bushnell Trophy and that was the end of my sight in prob:)

Definetly a classic case of you get what you pay for;)

You need to send the scope back to the manufacturer. They should replace it. It is true and you get what you pay for. I have always shot leupold on both civilian and military guns. It is a solid scope and can take a pretty good beating....but every product has its limitations. We are getting ready to buy nightforce for all our military sniper rifles....the vendor zeroed one...took it off the gun...beat it on a desk and put it back on the gun....still zeroed....we were sold...but as I said every product has its limitations....Send it back for a new scope.

Buy a good scope and good mounts and rings this should not happen.

I wouldnt trust that gun before I figured out the problem and fixed before I took it hunting. Normal taps and bangs to the gun or scope shouldnt move the Point of impact unless it was a severe blow. A gun and scope is a tool and should be able to with stand normal day to day usage.

Are you saying it shoots fine at the range off a bench and only when it gets a knock the POI shifts? If so,
-I'd replace the rings and bases with a quality steel set and test. (Usually a scope problem will show itself from recoil and when making adjustments (so both shooting and bump contact)

However if it shift between shots and range sessions as well as the bumps?
-Contact Bushnell's Customer Service to arrange for a RA# and send it back ASAP. Bushnell's come with a "Limited Lifetime Warranty". A wandering POI is covered...driving over it with your truck is not;).

Did you send it back to Leupold to see if there was a problem? I had to send my Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm Shotgun Scope back to Leupold this fall. I boughtit in 2002. It wasn'tholding zero. Leupold told me there was something loose and theyfixed it. Then they sent it back to me "next day air". It didn't cost me a penny. Leupold's customer service is OUTSTANDING!My friend had a similar problem with his Bushnell Shotgun Scope. He bought it about the same time I bought my Leupold. Bushnell wouldn't help him because it was out of warranty. He bought a Nikon ProstaffShotgun Scope (life time warranty) to replace it. Send your Leupold back, they'll take care ofit.

I think you have this backwards. "I bought a POS Bushnell scope, and it wouldn't hold zero, so I replaced it with a Leupold and never looked back." That is what it should have read. Bushnell scopes are bottom of the barrel, junk. Nuff Said.

You can get a bad scope with any brand. It sounds like you either got a bad scope or your rings are loose. I've had the same problem with another scope we bought we returned it and exchanged it for another one and never had a problem with it.

It COULD be a scope problem, but it sounds to me MORE like the mounts aren't sturdy enough. At any rate, a bump or two should not make a scope shift point of impact. I see it is a Bushnell. I have had very good performance from Bushnells, even the Banner series, which used to be their least expensive line. The first thing I would do is to replace your scope mount with a known, reliable make. Then if the same problem persists, contact Bushnell and see what they will do for you.

I have always had Leupold and now have 2 Zeiss scopes I have never had any problem with changing POI and I am pretty rough on all of my guns I would send the scope back and look for some quality steel bases and rings Leupold,Burris,Talley Etc. chad

and to make it more interesting- at the range your on a solid rest. shooting in a stand or off hand could make a 2 inch difference. if you shoot it at the range in summer heat it may hit way different come fall- winter hunting season.something about pressures being increased when its hotter out. also if you changed ammo or started into a new box of the same ammo that may be the reason. its getting fun now isint it:D

I had a low dollar Tasco scope that acted a lot like you've described. Found out that if I need to move 6 clicks right, I needed to go 8 clicks right then 2 clicks left to get the backlash out of the gears. Then give the scope a slap to make sure everything was settled. Not the best routine, but it got me by until I could afford better equipment.

RE: scope will not stay zeroed

Take your gun to a gunsmith and have them check your crown of your barrel if thats good then also have them check to see if the pillar's of your stock are embedded right. And still if thats good make sure u have good mounts on your gun also. But to add to that if your shooting a heavy caliber rifle you need a good scope that can hold up to the recoil, but if thats not the case check your bases, or like others said your scope might need to be sent in to the manufacturer.
