Fire Out Of Barrel
Just picked up my Model Seven .204 this afternoon.
Rushed home, mounted the Leupold scope and took it out to shoot. It was right around dusk, but I was hoping to fire a couple of rounds and at least get it on paper. An 8" flame shot out of the end of the barrel. Is this normal for a rifle this fast? Never had anything this fast before. Thanks |

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
My dad had the smae thing with his 30-06. When he shoots at dusk it has an 10-12in fireball come out of the barrel. Ive never shot my 204 at dark so i dont know if it dose it but i will expect it to. As for the 204 compared to a 243. The 204 is alot smaller then a 243. Its more comparable to a 17 Rem, 223, 222.

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
I was looking at some 243 ammo in 55gr. win. ballistic silver tip. Looked like a good bullet for fox and yotes. and maybe some heavier loads for antalope..Just wondering.

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
All guns do that. What do you think is pushing that bullet down the barrel. A big-ole ball of fire.
Even a .22LR will shoot a little flame out the end of a barrel. |
RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
55gr ammo out of a 243 would make a great fox and coyote round. I used a 243 for my second deer. I was using 110 gr ammo i think. it dropped in its tracks at 95 yards.

Another thing to keep in mind is that because your Model 7 has a short barrel, there's more powder being burnt after the bullet leaves the muzzle than if it had a longer barrel. The short barrel shouldcontribute tomore noise, less velocity, and the huge fireball you're seing. Longer barrels have less muzzle blast and more velocity, but aren't as handy.

Thats why its so fun to shoot wheel guns at night, the AR with tracers is fun too..........;)....

Itthe right thing for anight thing.:D

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
I bet there was gunpowder in the barrel! I hate when that happens!:D
|
RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
What d'ya expect to follow that lead out of the barrel? Water?:D
Its a controlled explosion, and thats what makes it fun!;) |
RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
Thanks for all the replies.
Makes complete sense, and yes, it sure was fun! That .204 has quite a bark With the wind slowing down this weekend, I will get it tuned in. All the local shops were sold out of the Hornady 32gr VMax, so I got a box of Remington 32grain Accutips. They looked similar. They also had some Winchester 34grain hallow-points, but I thought those might do more pelt damage, not sure though... |

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
i can see the fire from my 22-250 in broad daylight alot of times...it shocked me for a while becuase i have a 26" barrel on it.
my 870 turkey gun is also a fire spitter...think the 21" barrel has alot to do with that... you wanna see fire, shoot a flintlock at dusk :D |
RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
Yeah its normal, thats why guns are cool.
Dont shoot your eye out. |
RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
There's no comparison between the 204 and the 243 really...in two completely different leagues. The 204 can be compared to the 17 remington and the 220 swiftmore appropriately. Shoots a 40gr bullet over 4000 fps...very flat shooting..flatter than both the 17 Remington and the 220 swift actually. Happens to be on my "next to aquire" list :)

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
A lot of people buy cheap Mosin nagant M44s just for the flash and the bang (they certainly don't buy them for the accuracy)

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
Back to the original question...bullet velocity doesnt matter in the equation, it's the type and amount of powder used along with the length of barrel that determines the sizefire ball coming out of the muzzle. Try shooting an 30-06 load using R22 in an 18" carbine barrel, it's a pear burner!

RE: Fire Out Of Barrel
I had forgotten about this, I shot a doe in Dec 06 right at dark, and it looked like a flamethower. I would like to see my new 300WSM with the muzzlebrake shot at dark. That would look awesome.
