Not in that order based on the fact they are properly managed for big game , have good genetics in their herds and have liberal hunting seasons for a wide variety of game. |

RE: what state would you pick
Hell, I like where I am. :)
Southwestern Arkansas....I've got three lakes within two hours driving distance where people regularly pull 8-10 lb largemouths, two rivers that give up 50lb channel cats, and thousands of acres of timber owned by logging companies that'll give access with a phone call....several 150+ point whitetails are taken every year around here. We get six months of bow season, and a month of rifle. But yeah, if someone offered me a spot in Alaska, I wouldn't laugh at them. |
RE: what state would you pick

When was the last time you were down by Lake Cumberland. I heard the dam there was in big trouble. I used to fish that lake, along with Dale Hollow a good bit. I had some great times fishing, and hunting in KY, it was a great state.
It is great here in WV, but the lake fishing is a little sparse. We have a camp on Sutton Lake, but we are moving our camp to Burnsville Lake this year. The fishing on Sutton is good, it is just closer to go to Burnsville. There are only two states in the country that I have not been to. I have done alot of traveling. If I had to pick one place based solely on what I like to do-I would pick Flagstaff, Arizona. You can do it all there. they have Elk, Deer, Predator's, Varmint's, and lot's of trout. Alaska is truly an exciting place to be. It has it all. But being an older handicapped person I would have a hard time enjoying what it has to offer. Maybe for a young person. Just be prepared for tough conditions(all the time) Tom. |
RE: what state would you pick
i lived in the lake Cumberland area for a year and a half in 04
it is not in big trouble but in trouble there was a issue with it leaking and a issue it might collapse currently they are fixing it the water level is like 25% under winter level which now it is the lowest level since they built the dam but as i am sure you know it is a big lake so still alot of good fishing and the hunting i think is better since so many people left the area and in northen indiana where i grow up they had a lake that the dam had the same proplem andwhen it was lowfor 8 years land went from 10 grand a acre to 2 or less so i think you could get land cheap around lake cumberland right now for dale hollow i spent a year in burkesville which is right on the border by Celina Tn i liked it there but the fishing and hunting is not as good as Cumberland and the lake is real dirty and some what contaminated from all the house boats and the so called hillbilly septic systems that run into the lake if i move again it will be lake Cumberland or land between the lakes which is in west KY The only thing i got against KY hunting is it is so hilly and has so many cliffs it is hard to find a good spot and get caught trespassing down there you will get shot i the a** when i scouted i carry ed a handgun just in case i walk into someone property because there are alot of moonshiners and pot growers down there and it is easy to trespass out of the parks because there not marked deep in the woods ORIGINAL: HEAD0001 When was the last time you were down by Lake Cumberland. RE: what state would you pick
I might be getting too practical here, butI believeweare assuming you're just buying hunting land and are not going to move to that state?
In that case a major influence, with me at least, would be the game laws for non-residents. Many states have instituted huge price hikes for their non-resident licenses AND they are radically restricting what kind of hunting non-residents can do and where they can do it. Seasons have been altered for non-residents, they're banned from hunting on public land, fewer tags are allocated, and other restrictions apply and it doesn't matter if you own land. For example, New Mexico is mentioned. I don't know the current particulars, but I do recall that non residentswere either very restricted as far asthe number of elk tags that were allocated after the residents get tagsorthere are no non-resident tags at all unless you're with an outfitter. I could be wrong on this as it relates to NM, but the point is the rules are different ifyou're not a resident and often the cost is 2-10X more for a license or a tag. Look at South Dakota as well. It doesn't matter if you own land out there, you're still paying $110 for a pheasant license. And then they tried to ban non-residents from hunting at all during the first two weeks of season but later backed down not because it was a monumentally bad idea, but because the hotel, motel, and restaurant owners reminded the legislators which side of the bread the butter was on seeing as how the average resident spends $50 a year on hunting and then expects change. Basically it's quickly reaching the point where just because you own land doesn't mean you'll be able to hunt on it. Grouse |
RE: what state would you pick
I'd love to live in Montana, Wyoming or S. Dakota...but I'll probably never move away from Iowa at least until I retire which is a LONG way away.

I've never hunted anywhere other then New York State so I can't speak on experience. If I could buy a place to hunt other then NY, I'd like a place that I could hunt white tail deer, black bear and wild boar. I gotta have a little snow once in a whiletoo and no snakes, I don't like snakes. I also would like a place where you only use a shotgun forshooting SHOT, I hate slug guns. I don't know Northern or WesternVirginia along the West Virginia line,West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky or Eastern Tennessee. Again I've never hunted in any of theseplaces. Maybe I've got it all wrong. RE: what state would you pick
If money weren't an issue, I'd get some land in Colorado that had a trout stream and plenty of elk. Because I live in Kansas I am presently looking for land in SE KS.
|
RE: what state would you pick
If I had the money, I'd buy land in Buffalo county or on land in NW wisconsin. Some of the best Whitetail genetics in the country along with nearly perfect mineral content to grow huge bucks with huge racks. Also some of the best trout streams in the country are in that area and just to the north in the 'Coulee' country along the Mississippi river. The area is just to the east and north is pockmarked with large numbers of lakes full of smallmouth, panfish, walleye and muskies. We had a 3 day weekend trip with 5 of us that pulled over 400 (I caught over 50 of them just flyfishing )legal sized smallmouths, 2 dozen northern, 2 muskies, and as many bluegills as we could eat.

RE: what state would you pick
The lowcountry of South Carolina. Deer season is from August 15 to January 1. No limits on Bucks and lots of doe days plus can buy 4 doe tags for non doe days. Great fishing with Santee Cooper lakes and good fishing off the coast.

RE: what state would you pick
Go west young man, go west. There is still a lot of public land out west and the western states have a better veriety of game to hunt. West being west of the rocky mountains.
