RE: Ring height for 44mm objective lens?

I think I went with the high rings on my Howa Varminter with my Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x44. I had it mounted locally, and I think the guy at the shop told me that the medium rings just didn't quite get the scope up high enough above the bull barrel. If I were you I'd take it to a shop and give both medium and high rings a try.

What kind of rifle and in what caliber? What type of ringmounts and then finally what brand of medium scope?
Here is what I've got coming so far-

Remington 700SPS Varmint in .308 finally:D
(new shipment of 25 in at my dealers source)

Scope- Burris Signiature 4-16 x 44m BALLPLX Mat PA (about to order)

Rings & Base-I was looking at Leupold because that what I've used in the past, (with success anyways) I've tried going cheap before and paid the price.
Burris make some real good rings, I would go with a single piece base mount .

Ruger mediums give me about 0.080(2mm) clearance on a 44mm scope...

Was that on a bull barrell?

Is aone piecebase the standard when it comes to (attempting;)) long range shooting?

for a varmint 308 and that kind of glass I use burris signature rings with .010 inserts, that way you can take full advantage of the rifles capabilities.
RR
I see their signature rings come in Medium and High.

Which do you start with?
