Ring height for 44mm objective lens?

I'm piecing a new toy together and need to know if 44mm objective scope with Parallax adjustment will require high rings or if I can get away with medium rings.

I'll be placing my order later this morning and might purchase the rings locally ifI can't figure this out before then, thanksfor your time.

It depends on the ring manufacturer. For example, if they are Warne rings, it may require a medium but a low may fit (barely). Check the websites for the manufacturers. They usually list height requirements. If Talley, you can usually use low rings up to 44mm objective lens' and mediums up to 50mm (with standard barrel contours).

It also matters whether your scope has a 1" tube or 30mm tube. The bigger diameter tube will let you go with lower rings.

For my 44mm's I have always used mediums...

What kind of rifle and in what caliber? What type of ringmounts and then finally what brand of medium scope?

It's also going to depend on the action and barrel profile. My 17 HMR has low rings with a similar scope but the objective is VERY close to the barrel.

Here is what I've got coming so far-

Remington 700SPS Varmint in .308 finally:D
(new shipment of 25 in at my dealers source)

Scope- Burris Signiature 4-16 x 44m BALLPLX Mat PA (about to order)

Rings & Base-I was looking at Leupold because that what I've used in the past, (with success anyways) I've tried going cheap before and paid the price.

Medium rings...that scope is so long the bell will be past the barrel shank. Have you looked at Dednutz 1 piece bases/rings ?

No I haven't. I was thinking 2 piece for ease of loading & cleaning.

Speaking with the Tech at Natchez supply on the phone the bull barrell is going to make the ring height iffy on the mediums. He recommended buying them locally to make sure they are correct.

Mediums will work just fine...I can mount lows with a Kahle 50mm and you can slip a piece of paper between it and the barrel so I use mediums. The Kahles and SWaro scopes can be mounted real low because of their scope bell.

I think I went with the high rings on my Howa Varminter with my Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x44. I had it mounted locally, and I think the guy at the shop told me that the medium rings just didn't quite get the scope up high enough above the bull barrel. If I were you I'd take it to a shop and give both medium and high rings a try.

Burris make some real good rings, I would go with a single piece base mount .

Ruger mediums give me about 0.080(2mm) clearance on a 44mm scope...

Was that on a bull barrell?

Is aone piecebase the standard when it comes to (attempting;)) long range shooting?

for a varmint 308 and that kind of glass I use burris signature rings with .010 inserts, that way you can take full advantage of the rifles capabilities.
RR
I see their signature rings come in Medium and High.

Which do you start with?
