Default scope for 7MM08

Which scope for Whitetail deer 200Yds. or under? A 2x to 7x or a 3xto9x on a 7MM08? This would be in a area that is mostly wooded but some open areas.

I place a 3x9 on all my rifles. Set at its lowest you have plenty of biew for open shots and can bump it up for the longer shots. I rarely take my for my 270 off of 5x.

I would recommend a good quality 3X9 if you are looking for a deer scope. If you intend to occasionally whack a groundhog too, then perhaps a 4X12 may be better suited.

Anything in this range would be great. The only thing that I dont like about 2x7 is that they generally have a smaller objective. If your going to be hunting in the woods, the larger objective will gather a little more light. I personally would go with a 3x9x40mm.

I put a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on my son's 7mm-08 Ruger Hawkeye. Works real well.

Agree with oldelkhunter - what kind of gun. I like a scope that's proportionate to the rifle. To me there is just something about having a nice fast handling rifle and having it decked out with a big scope. If your rifle is something on the order of a Rem 700 or Browning A-bolt Medalion then a 3-9X with a 40mm Obj would look good. But on something like a Rem model 7 or Browning micro hunter a 2-7X 32mm would be nice. Just buy the best scope you can afford. Please don't go to wally world and buy one of those cheap BSAs, tascos or simmons. (I do have a 4-12x (dare I say in here without getting my head bit off) better end Tasco on my Savage 223 that I use for varmints and it hasn't failed me yet.

I have a 3x9 Monarch on the longer barrelled sps and a 2x7 Pro Staff on the adl. I really like a 2x7 for woods hunting.
