scope for 7MM08
Which scope for Whitetail deer 200Yds. or under? A 2x to 7x or a 3xto9x on a 7MM08? This would be in a area that is mostly wooded but some open areas.

RE: scope for 7MM08
I place a 3x9 on all my rifles. Set at its lowest you have plenty of biew for open shots and can bump it up for the longer shots. I rarely take my for my 270 off of 5x.

RE: scope for 7MM08
I would recommend a good quality 3X9 if you are looking for a deer scope. If you intend to occasionally whack a groundhog too, then perhaps a 4X12 may be better suited.

RE: scope for 7MM08
What kind of gun?

RE: scope for 7MM08
Anything in this range would be great. The only thing that I dont like about 2x7 is that they generally have a smaller objective. If your going to be hunting in the woods, the larger objective will gather a little more light. I personally would go with a 3x9x40mm.

RE: scope for 7MM08
I put a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on my son's 7mm-08 Ruger Hawkeye. Works real well.

RE: scope for 7MM08
i'd go 3-9x40 if you'll be shooting 200 yd.

RE: scope for 7MM08
Agree with oldelkhunter - what kind of gun. I like a scope that's proportionate to the rifle. To me there is just something about having a nice fast handling rifle and having it decked out with a big scope. If your rifle is something on the order of a Rem 700 or Browning A-bolt Medalion then a 3-9X with a 40mm Obj would look good. But on something like a Rem model 7 or Browning micro hunter a 2-7X 32mm would be nice. Just buy the best scope you can afford. Please don't go to wally world and buy one of those cheap BSAs, tascos or simmons. (I do have a 4-12x (dare I say in here without getting my head bit off) better end Tasco on my Savage 223 that I use for varmints and it hasn't failed me yet.

RE: scope for 7MM08
I have a 3x9 Monarch on the longer barrelled sps and a 2x7 Pro Staff on the adl. I really like a 2x7 for woods hunting.

RE: scope for 7MM08
I like leupolds VXIII 2.5x8 x32 ....light, clear, and reliable...just a great scope for light short action rifles. Many custom rifle builders mount this scope on their finished product.

RE: scope for 7MM08
I got a 7mm08 and i have a simmons aetec 2 1/2-9. It lite, compact, and is like havind a 50 MM SCOPE BECAUSE OF ITS WIDE AREA OF VIEW. It picks up lite extremely well in the morning. I think it is actually brighter in the scope than with just my eyes. Never had a problem with it and im the person that is a hardcore hunter that punishes his equipment. They are worth the price...

RE: scope for 7MM08
I'm with steelerzzz. I have the Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8 on my 7-08AI. It has the perfect balance for quick shots in the timber and the power needed for those longer than normal shots. Leupolds are also known for their long eye relief. I bought a 300WinMag from my brother. He had a 3x9 Simmons on it. I cut the bridge of my nose every time I pulled the trigger. It has been replaced with a Leupold VX III 3.5-10 with the Boone & Crockett reticle.
