Well theres always the 7mm or 300 Ultra Mags. They are slightly overkill for deer and alot of fun to shoot.

You are thinking of the 7mm. It fits the description of your wants/needs perfectly. Many people have them, many people like them.

The 7mm would be great or you could look at a 300 win. mag. or wsm.

I had the same "magnumitus" once! I bought the 7MM RM and I do love it! Its accurate, powerful, flat shooting and recoil is very manageable too! But after getting over "magnumitus," I'm going down to the .243!. Its almost as flat shooting as the 7MM RM, and no Whitetail gets killed any deader! But........ one can never have too many guns! Good luck!

The 7mmremmag is a fine choice.

7mm is a nice choice, or I might suggest as well the .300 Win mag, Ultra mag...whatever.

I shot a .270 at deer for years and 7mm mag when shooting atPower Lines or Senderos. Since 1995 I have been shooting a Ruger M77 in 6.5mmSwede..

A lot of the responses are saying the 7mm mag is a good choice but to look into the 300 mags. I agree with all of them, including the ones that say the 7mm. Personally I would rather a 300 mag. Either the 300 Win Mag or 300WSM if it were my choice. A good 180 .308 cal bullet is hard to beat ballistically and has plenty of oomph for anything on this continent. My friend uses a Browning Titanium in 300WSM almost exclusively and has taken 23 of the 28 big game animals in NA with it including a huge brown bear using Nosler Accubonds in 180 gr.

Unless you use a 300 ultra mag you are not going to see any difference between a 7 rem mag or 300 win mag certainly on deer and more then likely on Elk provided you use the right bullets. I base this on years of shooting both at big and medium game.A lot of people will differ on this opinion and I am ok with that as well since everyone has a comfort level with certain cartridges. If your going to be shooting deer with the occasional elk then by all means get a 7 mag in some flavor , put a scope on it and go kill something. I wouldn't even dream of using a 300 win mag on the largest Bears ..that would be a 8MM Remington 325 wsm and up exclusive territory.

7 Mag is a good caliber even though the 300 Win is more versitile...

RE: NEw GUN

I have to agree with oldelkhunter. A 300 mag is capable but it wouldn't be my first choice either for big bears. But with a 180 or 200 gr quality bullet, it would be better than a 7mm mag. My choice would be either my 325WSM or I'd have an excuse to get me a new 416 Rem.

i think you may have been asking a question you already knew the answer to. 7mm RM is what you're looking for according to your description.

i want something with knock down power. Where i hunt its pretty crowded the first day. I also want a gun that drops little and is big...Mostly because i want to go out west one day.

I need another gun because my Fiance just started hunting and the 7mmo8 is perfect for here, but i dont want to buy 2 guns that do the same thing so i figured go bigger-get a good elk, bear gun.
