Handgunners check in
I've been on this board for I don't know how long now, bout 3 years or better I believe, and I've posted a bit, not much, in spurts mostly, I do a lot of readin though, and I RARELY see a post about handgun shooting/hunting/care/opinions/etc. This leads me to believe that there just aren't that many of us out there, which I find sad, and rediculous.
I guess just for a count, who's here that handguns, what do you shoot i.e. revolvers, autos, bolts, breaks, a lot of calibers, Double action or single, derringers, and what do you use them for? I'll start myself, I shoot autos, .45, .380 or .22 for small game and home/personal protection. I prefer Single action wheelguns, .22, .44, which I use for small game, coyotes, and deer, and some personal protection, I also use my .44's for CAS. I also shoot a .38 double barreled derringer for CAS and plinking. Does anyone like handgunnin more than riflry or wingshooting (longgunning)???? I know I do. Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!! |
RE: Handgunners check in
I do both handgun and rifle. Started out with a little single action H&R 22 on squirrels, then moved into a 357 Dan Wesson for deer. The last few years I went to a 7mm-08 in a Savage Striker for deer or yote. Still use a Ruger Single 6 22 on small game. Zeak

RE: Handgunners check in
DG, didn't mean to pi$$ on your parade. Yes, I clay shoot, bench shoot, plink, trap shoot, reload, cowboy shoot, and hunt, with both long guns and hand guns....my point is, no matter what you use them for, I would never believe that the number of post on this board regarding handgunning is proportionate to the number of actual handgun shooters...I was only specifying and comparing two categories, long guns and handguns, not what one chooses to do with them. I'll say it in a manner similar to what you'd hear, I find it rediculous that there are so many responses to specific posts regarding ONE utility aspect of a long gun...say about trap guns...every year/month while there are so few posts with ANYTHING to do with handgunning. I never meant to imply that it is rediculous that there are so few members here that shoot handguns ONLY, I meant to imply that it is sad there appear to be so few members here that shoot handguns AT ALL.
Does such a drastic majority of members here have NOTHING to do with handguns? This is why I posted this strand, to find out if indeed there are truly so few of us handgunners here, while there are so many guys here that do so much with several types of long guns, like a guy who hunts deer, moose, upland, geese/duck, and plinks, shoots clay, and benchrest shoots, an obvious indicator, in most instances, that he has several guns. With nearly all members here having extended and varied interests in long gunning, and with such a large amount of members here that not only shoot modern long guns, but muzzleloders/traditional arms, or archery as well, I find it hard to believe that so few of them own/shoot handguns additionally. I'm merely attempting to determine a census of how many members here own, hunt, or shoot handguns for any reason at all. I'd venture to guess that nearly 75-80% of us members own more than one shotgun and one rifle, and use them for varied activities like those you mentioned, but to read the posts here, one gets the impression that less than 5% of those multiple firearm owners possess even just ONE handgun. And as I said before, if there truly are so few members here that own/shoot/hunt handguns, in only in addition to their long guns, I find that sad and rediculous. Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!! |
RE: Handgunners check in
I've shot handguns for years, but only started hunting with a handgun last year. I have not killed with it yet! I shoot a Ruger Super Redhawk .44 mag.
While we are on the subject, I'd like to remind everyone that we need to support one another! I am not talking about anyone here, but I have heard a wingshooter or two talk against handguns! Guns are GUNS, and the anti's would like nothing better than for us to be divided. To them NO gun is a good gun, and they will take them away one type at a time if we don't defend each other! |
RE: Handgunners check in
I shoot and carry a few different handguns. I have a custom 1911 10mm, it is a paraordanance double stack body with caspian slide and quadralock barrel, slide release and ambi safety. I have 4 15 rounds magazines for it and carry it for close range deer hunting, predator hunting, and mainly for bowling pin shooting. I have a Taurus Ti Tracker in 41 mag that I use for a carry gun while fishing and bow hunting, with 250gr cast loads for bear defence. I also have a Taurus Raging bull 454 cassul that I deer hunted with and occasionally carried for bear defence, its just to heavy for every day carrying. I think I need two more hand guns, a Ruger auto 22lr, and a large caliber single action revolver, freedom arms, or custom ruger black hawk in 454 or 475 Linebough

RE: Handgunners check in
I do a lot of handgun shooting and use them to hunt as well. I have taken several deer with the 44 mag both in revolver and TC contender. I carry a 4" 357 mag as a carry gun until I get a new 1911 45 auto. I have never been without some sort of 357 Mag but I shoot mostly 38 specials in them. For defense loads I carry mid-range 357 loads just a hair hotter than 38+P loads. I have a S&W 9mm auto for plinking.

RE: Handgunners check in
well i shoot a lot of hangun rounds (well not enough but roughly 100 times as many as what i shoot out of rifles). I simply find handguns more fun and more challenging. i also got my first deer ever this fall and low and behold it was with a handgun

RE: Handgunners check in
I prefer handguns to rifles because my shooting buddy is better with rifles than I am, but I shoot pistols better than he does!

RE: Handgunners check in
Zeak, which striker do you have? Is the stainless model with the muzzle break, or the blued model without?

RE: Handgunners check in
I love handgun hunting. I have just discovered it about a year ago and got so hooked on it that I went whole hog and got a Dan Wesson 445 supermag with a 8" barrel and topped with a 2x7 burris. It is a perty setup and I love shooting it. I can choose to change barrels with it from 4 6 8 10 inchers. then I can get them in a compensated version too. Very multipurpose weapon. I haven't taken anything with it yet as I can't hunt in NJ with it but if I get to pa next year I will be using it.
I love my 270 weatherby mag 7mm rem mag and 338 win mag but now I am getting into this handgun hunting thing more and more. I also shoot a ruger slab sided bull barrel 22 and my wifes sig p232 380. Brian |
RE: Handgunners check in
I have taken three deer and a hog with my ruger redhawk 44mag with a 2x scope and love to have a close range alternative when hunting from a blind.
I am really interested in the Savage stiker and would love to add it to my small gun collection. The only question is- is the stainless version with muzzle break worth the extra green over the blued model with no muzzle break? |
RE: Handgunners check in
I hunt a lot with a handgun. I prefer my Blackhawk in 45 colt but I also have an Encore with several barrels. I also prefer peep sights or reddots to scopes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking scopes or the people that use them.

RE: Handgunners check in
Nomercy,
I think what you are noticing is that this is a hunting related board, and as such people tend to focus on the guns that they hunt with. I don't see to many benchrest or skeet shooting questions around here do you? Furthermore, you should note that a person can acheive hunting accuracy with a shoulder mounted weapon more easily than with a handgun (requiring less time for practice, more time for hunting by persons with a limited amount of free time). Therefore, most of the people do most of their hunting with long guns, ergo most of the posts at this site concentrate on long guns. However, I thought the same thing about two years ago when I decided to scope my SBH for some whitetail hunting. I have since gotten quite addicted to hunting with a handgun (most notably my Encore 14" 7-08). As a result I frequent this board less often, and have moved to boards that have forums dedicated to handgun hunting. You will find that there aren't nearly the abundance of handgun hunters as there are long gun hunters. But, they all are very serious and have an unbelievable amount of knowledge. If you want feel free to shoot me an e-mail and I will send you some of the forums that concentrate on handguns. Oh, and as for the count, I have revolvers autos and single shot handguns, I use them from squirrels to deer and for self defense. Gordon ...with the priveledge of hunting comes the responsibilty to respect the outdoors... |

RE: Handgunners check in
Hi Nomercy,
Looks like a couple of feathers got ruffled;)! As of last count, I'm currently a little light in the handgun department. (Semi-retired, process of moving to Alaska, and in general preoccupied with other issues.) Taurus 9422SS, 4" Barrel, SS, .22LR S&W 642 Airlight, 1 7/8" Barrel, .38 Special S&W 649 Bodyguard, 2 1/8" Barrel, SS, .357 Magnum S&W 66 Ladysmith, 3" Barrel, SS, .357 Magnum Kel-Tec P32, .32 ACP Kel-Tec P3AT, .380 ACP Taurus PT92AF, 9mm CZ 100, .40 S&W Ruger P94, SS, .40 S&W Para-Ordinance P-12, .45 ACP As you can see.....nothing there specifically tailored for hunting other than the Taurus 9422. A nice double action .22LR with a 4" barrel, stainless steel....about the same frame size as a S&W J Frame. (Like the "kitgun".) It's equipped with adjustable sights and makes a fine small game revolver...as well as double duty for a quick finisher. Currently living in Pennsylvania.....and not having had the outdoor time I would have liked to.....I traded off some other handguns more suited specifically for medium game hunting. Though either of the Smith revolvers above, chambered in .357 Magnum make fair trail companions.....for 90 percent of anything you'd need done in this state. When we complete our move back to Alaska we will be adding some "heavy" caliber revolvers specifically with big bear in mind. (Several starting with the little Taurus in .41 Magnum.....already mentioned above......and probably ending with another Taurus Raging Bull 5" barrel in either .480 Ruger.....or .454 Casull. Though there well may be a .44 Magnum or two......S&W Model 29 or 629, maybe the Mountain Gun.......and if possible a Ruger Redhawk with a 5 1/2" barrel.) Plus maybe a couple of Ruger Vaquero's and/or Blackhawks....(just because I really like them:D)! At various times throughout my life, I've used any number of other handguns in the outdoors. Heaven only knows how many I've traded, sold, bought, given to relatives or friends.....over the years. But most of them have been enjoyable companions....and a few....have been special! (As only a handgunner can know!;)) Dave |
RE: Handgunners check in
There are plenty of us, but I suspect the dedicated, handguns-only bunch have other forums that are pretty much limited to sixguns, etc.

RE: Handgunners check in
ORIGINAL: eldeguello There are plenty of us, but I suspect the dedicated, handguns-only bunch have other forums that are pretty much limited to sixguns, etc. While I don't post a whole lot, I've tried to offer my opinion on the subjects related to my experience and this board. However, I don't feel it appropriate to post 'off subject' topics ie; non-hunting, paper punching with a handgun as this forums group is dedicated to the hunting sports. I still do a little deer hunting in the fall, with a rifle and handgun but haven't used a shotgun in years (still own one tho) I think the main thing here, and on the other forum groups also, is that we all share a common passion for the guns we shoot whether they be long or short, and the freedom that allows us to own these guns and discuss them freely on these forums. Just my 2 cents Wes |
RE: Handgunners check in
I got some, but don't shoot them anywhere near as much as I would like (hard to find the time). I try and have a shoot with my brother (16) and sister (38) once a year, but it usually ends up being every other year :(. I do take a couple hunting but never have shot at a deer with 'em, some day maybe (not the greatest shot in the world - need more practice - see above)
my list: Ruger NM Super Blackhawk (.44 mag) - hunting Pheonix (.22 auto) - plinking/camping Llama "1911" (.45) - hunting/camping/plinking/carry gun Ruger Mark II (.22) - great shooter Ruger NM Single Six (.22) - fun plinker Dan Wesson (.357 mag) - loaded by the bed FMJ derringer (.45 LC/.410) - only cost $35 - what the heck wish list - Ruger Vaquero (.45 ACP/.45 LC) - just because and maybe a 9mm of some sort |

RE: Handgunners check in
I shoot mainly 41 mag and 45 lc. Hunting and cowboy action shooting. I do take my ruger 22/45 rabbit hunting what a hoot. It's alot more challenging to shoot running jack rabbits with a pistol than using a rifle. Pistols are very fun to shoot alot. Anyone shooting the ruger 30cal? What alittle zipper of a caliber in a pistol.
|
RE: Handgunners check in
I mentioned my Ruger SRH .44 Mag. But I didn't mention the rest of the family.
Dan Wesson .357 H&R .32 and a couple of .22 plinkers! I'd like to add a 45 ACP (1911 Colt), A TC Contender and a Colt or Ruger .25 Colt SAA someday, but the finances are not there right now!:( So I'll just be content with the ones I've got for now!:) |
RE: Handgunners check in
I am a handgunner, rifleman, and a little bit of bowhunting. I was just today looking at a new Ruger Super Blakchawk Hunter Bisley, what a beautiful gun that is!
As for right now, I have a good collection. Smith and Wesson Sigma stainless, .40 S&W, Smith and Wesson .500 mag., Ruger Redhawk .44mag, Ruger Blakchawk .357 mag, Glock 21 and 30, Smith and Wesson 9mm, and a Beretta U22 neos .22. I guess the only new one I am looking at is that hunter! But rifles are my passion...... |
RE: Handgunners check in
Gentlemen and Ladies,(I assume there are some ladies here?)
This is my first post on this board. I've just recently aquired a Ruger SBH with the intention of some hawg or whitetail hunting. Hooo-weee! is this a different world than bench-rest prairie-doggin that is my passion. I thought the thousands of rounds I've sent downrange from my S&W 28 and Ruger MKII would equip me for handgun hunting, but it's becoming apparent that I need to pay attention to anything y'all may have to offer in the way of advice. Anyway, I'm all ears. |
RE: Handgunners check in
JagMag - it is scary that we can be so opposite in one category (registration B.S.) and have almost identical pistols/pistol preferences
guess there is always some common ground |
RE: Handgunners check in
.44 Mag Ruger Super Redhawk - with some SWEET handloads - 1,500 factory rounds, 1,200 handloads
.45 Kimber Custom Target - 3,500 rounds .45 Kimber Ultra-Carry II - 2,000 rounds .22 Ruger Mark II Target - 7,000+ rounds |
RE: Handgunners check in
I've been handgun hunting almost exclusiely for over 20 years. I've taken everything from rabbits to a moose with handgun. I use mostly revolvers but have used quite a few different S/S's (T/C contender, encore and lone eagle) and bolt guns (XP100s and savage strikers).
|
RE: Handgunners check in
I do have more rifles than handguns, but I do have a handgun or two!
Here are the handgun cartridges I load for: .32 ACP .32 S&W Long .32 H&R .32/20 7.62 Nagant .38 S&W .38 Special .38 Super .357 magnum .380 9x18 makarov 9x19 .44 Special .44 magnum .45 ACP .45 Colt This doesn't include some of the oddball stuff, like 8mm French Ordnance, 10.4 Italian, etc. Some are toys, some are hunters, some are defense guns. |
RE: Handgunners check in
I'm glad this post was brought up again because I'm kind of new here and have not seen it. I'm an avid bowhunter, but when it comes to my choice of weapons, its a pistol!! As you can see by my screen name, I'm into T/C's. Currently, I have 9 Contender/Encore pistol barrels. Calibers range from .22 Match to .450 Marlin. I also do some small game hunting with a Ruger Competition Target 22lr, High Standard Double-nine convertible and hunt deer with a .480 SRH and a S&W model 57. As for non-hunting pistols, I have a Kimber Ultra CDP .45, S&W model 627(I bought it today), North American Arms mini 22mag and a S&W model 48 nickel. I'm going to a gunshow on Sunday and hope to find a Kimber Eclipse Target II to add to the collection.[8D]

RE: Handgunners check in
Where did this post come from?.Someone went digging in the archives .That proves someone has to much extra time on their hands or just plain boredom LOL.I have been known to dabble in a little shooting of handguns. Not as much as I would like.I love shooting all guns when time will allow. At one time 4 or 5 nights of the week I would go to the indoor range.I was getting pretty good but that was along time ago.Now I probably couldn't hit a bull in the rump with a base fiddle. At least I hope the thugs think so.LOL.
