Default Dumb Rifle Stock Question

Anybody know the origins and why some gun stocks have the black tip on the fore end? Just styling or does did it serve a purpose?

Thanks.

pretty sure its just styling..

the all black ones never did much for me...ive seen some with a piece of fancy wood at the end that kinda looked nice...

depends on personal tastes i guess...

but i dont think they do anyting "functional" as far as i know...could be wrong..

Actuallyreal ebony forend tipsand grip cap do serve a function as well as adding some "class" to the rifle.

Ebony is much much more dense and harder than walnut so it resists dings and dents better than walnut would. The place it on the forend tip and grip cap because these are the two places on a stock that seem to get banged into stuff when hunting and shooting.

People also use other types of "hard" woods as well but black ebony is by far the most popular.

see bigbulls....i learn somethin new every day...thanx

only "black ones" ive seen up close were on one of my buddies rifles...cant remember if it was a weatherby or remington...but it had a black forarm tip...somehow, it came off because he put a bipod on it...it just had a dowel rod or 2 acting as a peg holding it in place...im almost posative that was just a piece of painted wood...

.....and they are a pain in the butt when you go to refinish a stock, especially if they have a white spacer like Winchester
