I am about to blow up my 30 - 06

I own a 10+ year old savage 110E, when I sited it in before the season began I was right on the bull at 100 yrds. I have not used it much during. took it to the range today, could not hit chit. if it is not the scope mount or the scope, should I take it to a gunsmith and it the chamber and bore checked?

I don't have a the stuff or the time to do it myself.

Shoot it at 25 yards to get on paper if its way off at 100.

Sounds like you might have a issue with the scope or the mounts or with the stock - if it is wood.

Warpage is a likely cause.

Where do you store this gun and how do you transport it to the range?

RE: I am about to blow up my 30 - 06

love to do that, just go 2 rounds left, and don't have time right now to reload any. and not paying the prices for factory loads, ($19/ per box of chitty wolf gold and $22 for win sp's) I only have 6 days of center left anyway, my ML is good to go, a month early too, thank god.

I missed 3 deer last year with the same rifle diffrent scope set up. that is what makes me think it something else.

if you run though what I need to look for I check it tomarrow and see if I can find.

must the time if is stored in my bed room with ac running year round, even with snow on the ground. and a basic bull dog carring case.

I will take it sight unseen for the action alone if you'll care to donate it or sell for very low cost. check yer bedding and double check your scope,rings.mounts.

I have a Ruger MKII 270 ready to go w/a Simmons Whitetail Expedition Scope 1MOA all day long. I would allow you some trade in value for your rifle and scope if interested? e-mail me at [email protected]

Does it have iron sights installed?
If so, strip the glass and bases and rings, then pop the action out and reinstall with care to get your action screws tight in the proper procedure for your rifle/action. Usually tighten the front action screw until fingertip tight (using two fingers and a thumb with a screwdriver)y, then the rear also finger tip tight, then back to the front with a screw driver equipped with a torque wrench if you are so inclined. Remington calls for as light as 15 lbs of torque on action screws and some rifles that are pillar bedded (yours?) can have as much as 65 lbs of torque applied. The key is for it to be even or to match what the manufacturer thinks. Regardless of all the advice, your gun will tell you what it likes. Then shoot a couple 5 shot groups with irons only (make sure the irons are tight). Don't worry about where it’s hitting, only hold for groups...you can adjust the irons if you want but you first want to make sure the rifle can shoot.
Then reinstall you bases, rings and scope carefully and correctly. Make sure everything is tight.
Now try again with the optics. If it's still all over the placethen you probably have a bedding issue. Good luck. I will be doing this myself with an older 110 in 30/06 soon. It has the integral bases as part of the action so that is one thing I don't have to worry about. However, I DO NOT have the dual pillar bedding (something I intend to correct myself down the line).

RE: I am about to blow up my 30 - 06

here is the whole story of how I got the gun. I went to a gun shop that was closing it doors. I was looking for a .243. found a .243 and saw the 30 - 06 setting next to it. it was $100 less then the .243. It was used when I bought it. I ended up taking about 10 years off from hunting (jobs, college, and got married).

I am going to take a look at the bedding, I found the ring screws where loose, I am going to pick up some lock tight and fix that, they maybe stripped. thinking about replacing the base and ring too. good thing I got 2 other guns to fall back on.

I took a real close at the bedding and where the barrel meets the stock. there is a space about mm one side and the other is almost touching. took it out of the stock, I see rubbing in three places. the bedding at a crease up the middle of the stock, took a lightly damb paper towl and cleaned the bedding a little.

hope this helps a little more.

I have thought about one more thing, the ammo. it was a box I got last year (I know age don't matter) and only fired 3 rounds last year. I got it from walmart for like $14 (they still have it for that). could/should I try a differnt brand or type or grain?

I am going to work on my 30 -06 after all my seasons are done in about month to go. I have found some rounds for the same price I got last year. with chirstmas coming I need the money to get my wife something nice. I may also get a new base and rings they are over 10 years old and the heads are get stripped and all rusted. never like the base and rings anyway they the one piece see trough.

RE: I am about to blow up my 30 - 06

My first thought was the barrel needs to be (re)floated. Take a dollar bill and try and slide it between the forestock and the barrel. If it does not want to go, then your forend is touching the barrel and can throw off your shots.
Remove stock from action/barrel, find a piece of dowel that is just slightly smaller than the barrel mortice, and wrap some sandpaper around it and slowly and carefully remove just enough stock material to fit thew dollar bill. You will need to assemble and unassemble (??) a couple times or more. Being careful NOT to overtighten action screws. If you have a cordless drill with a ratchet adjustment, SET IT TO 3 OR LESS (LOW) AND USE IT TO REPLACE THE SCREWS.

Then take it out in a controlled environment and put 3 in paper starting at 25 yards, and working longer.

well, looks like mutiple problems, loose screws (fixed( my wife says I have few of those)). I did not have a dollar bill so I used a 10. the right side did not want to go. I don't have any sandpaper or a daw rod, I got some pvc pipe a little smaller. will that work

I feel the see through sights are a big problem. I will bet they are all aluminum, but even steel of that design puts too much leverage on mounts.

Buy leupold/redfield style they are a good value.

If you don't have time, take to a smith.

You speak as though you might be on a tight budget, and I understand that, but don't let saving a few bucks, cost you a lot of time and money.

Did you say brand/model of scope?

please no downing I do plan to upgrade later.

RE: I am about to blow up my 30 - 06

Please don't think I am downing you. We sight in rifles as a side business, and I only look at past experience as an indicator of possible problems. And I am sorry to say that is a model I would be suspect of. The tubes are thin, and the suspension is light, they have a high failure rate. Sorry, that is just what I have witnessed in the past. I am not saying you have a scope problem, just offering feedback.

As a note there are some VERY expensive scopes I do not think are very good values either.

I would hunt with my MZ I was confident in, until I could buy a $200 scope and new mounts. Something with a lifetime warranty(good value), like a buckmaster and some leupold mounts and rings.

Unless you know of abuse, I would not think the gun had major problems. Yes a wood stock warping can be a problem also, that would be a judgement I would make if I saw it. PVC with sandpaper should work fine to relieve the stock if you decide to go that way, doubt you would hurt anything by trying.

Just sounds like you are in a little bind.

In your situation I would:

Clean gun well including copper solvent.

Check all mountings by strength of hand while gun is firmly mounted in a vise. Looking for loose stock, scope mounts, bases rings.

Look for a bent scope tube, usually right at the power adjustment ring, this is the weakest/thinnest part of the scope.

While gun is locked in vise, adjust power of scope and see if crosshairs jump or move POI.

While gun is locked in vise , tap on scope with hard plastic like screwdriver handle, in worse cases you cand see poi change.

Try new style ammo.

To do these things yourself you will have to be creative and patient.

RE: I am about to blow up my 30 - 06

I am going to get new scope mounts and rings. work on the stock. sadly I am in the middle of rifle season. I am lucky I have my muzzleloader and I have my sks for back up. it won't be until feb. before I can do anything. I am reloading 30 -06 but I was using up some factory loads I had left. they where what I was firing when I had the problem.

I was hoping it was something that was going be faster to fix. this year I had any luck it has been bad on all but 1 guns (sks). thanks for the help,

RE: I am about to blow up my 30 - 06

that is what I am going to do. I just talked to my wife about it. She told me to just take it to the gunshop I work with all the time. It should not be that much. I was in there when a guy picked up his gun that just got refinished and some other work done. The cost of the work plus I think some shells he bought for it came up to $52 something.

when I ever get all the damn chit fix, I am going to buy some rounds I found for $11 just to check and save my reloads when I know it working.

Loosen the action screws. Take 4 or 5 dollar bills and put them together underneath the barrel (couple inches back from the front of the stock). Then tightenthe screws up. Remove bills and check again to see if it is floating now.

that worked, both side now will go smooth and even. to bad I don't have time to get it to the range before the last day (sat.). oh well, ML and sks come into play.

ok, some I left out when I start the whole thing. I am the second owner of the gun, I bought it 10 years ago from a gun shop, so I don't know how it was don't know how it was cared for before I got it. I try to baby my guns as much as possible. did not fire it much between then and now, last year was the first year I hunted with it. (used a 12 ga and my dad's 30 - 30 in the past) took it out one time last year and shot it just to sight. it was with many times this year. I did not know enough at the time to look for problems. I know alot more now. if I can't find a problem or don't know where to start looking. I will just ask.
