Barrel length? How much is To much?
#1
Whats up guys,I have been toying with the idea of getting another barrel for my encore. Now here is the twist. How about 28" or maybe even 30"(If I can have one made).Probally in 25.06.Do you think this is a good idea or just the ramblings of someone with too much time on their hands.I am thinking you could get some wild velocities. But I know hot does not mean accurate. This would just be a play toy unless it proved up.Then we would take it to the bean field. What do you think?

For most powders, and almost all factory ammo for the .25-06, the case is able to attain maximum efficiency in a barrel varried somethin along the lines of 24-28" BBL, depending on load and humidity, Barometric pressure, temp outside, etc....so even though you'd think a 30"bbl would be more accurate, firstly, you'll never notice the accuracy increase of two inches, and I guaranttee it's not worth the money to have one made just for the hairline difference it may provide, and it's not going to help your combustion at all, so it may in fact hinder your accuracy more than help it because the bullet is still in the barrel after the powder is completely combusted (drag from additional rifling length coupled with extended period of "pushing air" without proper propulsion).
Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!!

I'm firmly convinced that barrels for hunting or even varminting over 24" are not of much value to the shooter at all. If you've got something like a .50BMG...I'll back away from that statement but for the .223-.300 mag group of shooters.....there's really not a lot to be gained for the extra length of barrel. All of Winchester's magnums have been sold with 26" barrels in recent years.....I truly think it's marketing more than performance.
The faster a bullet travels, the less time it spends in that last two inches of barrel and the less time the pressure has to influence the velocity. It's a case of diminishing returns, and they diminish real fast. Look at the amount of powder the .30-.378 burns compared to the .300 Win Mag....look at the velocity gains!!
Magnumitis is a bad sickness.....it's expensive!

If you find yourself hitting the ceiling or ceiling fan while handling the gun in the house, the barrel is probably too long. I've accidentally marked up the ceiling with a persian rilfe with a 29.5" barrel in my office.

You can always start with a longer barrel, if it doesn't work out, you can cut a couple of inches off and recrown.

MR300WM, I own two .375 H&H......I too have it. It's contageous and damaging to the pocket book.....it takes many years of small bore therapy to get over it!!

personally i sometimes like longer barrels. im young and strong and i dont walk far to hunt (not to mention i can hunt with rifles here, so weight is down). for target shooting. there is no real reason to get a short barrel, then again there are no real advatages to it either, other than feel and balance which is a personal thing
