270 or 300 WSM
#11
I gotsome ballistics off Remingtons website for you. I did 270 WSM, 300 WSM, and 338 Win Mag. I went through the same debate as you except mine was 300 WSM or 338 Win Mag. I ended up wit the 300 WSM. I hope this helps with your choice.

Those figures for the 338 sound kind of skewed .. Are you saying that the 270 wsm and 300 wsm have more killing power then a 338 based on the Remington website or paper figures
www.federalcartridge.com click on ballistics pick out all three cartridges with the same or close sectional density or ballistic coefficient...210 or 225 grain X bullet or Accubond for the 338 and a 150 grain x or accubond for the 270 and a 180 grain x or accubond for the 300 wsm. Then come back with your findings.n

Why a bolt? I like the auto for two reasons....less recoil and a quick second shot. I like the Short Trac for the weight and I don't want a wood stock. They get beat up and look like hell.
What do you mean "price point gun"?

BAR's were getting toooooooo expensive to manufacture. These are much cheaper to make. Aluminum reciever...and all the calibers have the same rate of twist. They also wanted something that looked like the Benelli R1.. Only thing the consumer gets is a lighter rifle and not much more.

Federal chart is very nice. Plain to see the obvious choice is a 270 WSM or 300 WSM. The 300 Win Mag is ok but not quite a 300 WSM. If you had the choice why not a WSM? The plain 270 is not even in the running.
I like the weight of the Short Trac and my old BAR 300 Win Mag would jam if was was real cold. Besides it was heavy. I would imagine the accuracy is similar.

You can get 3100+ out of a 300 win mag with a 26" barrel in real life, you'll have a heavier rifle and a little more push..your hard pressed to get 2960 with a 300WSM and maybe on a great day with the right load you can get 3000 but I haven't yet , so yes it is more then a WSM and less if you buy factory ammo...I have had/have a model 70,Abolt,Weatherby Vanguard,Vanguard SUBMOA and a Sako 75 in 300 wsm. I have had a Weatherby VAnguard in 270 WSM and a Model 70 in 7WSM. All handloaded for .. the most impressive was the 7wsm followed by the 300 wsm...in real life the 270 WInin the right rifle(24" barrel) will almost match the 270wsm with a lot less hassle and 1/2 the price on ammo. If you want a real step up go to a 270 Weatherby. The federal guide is that only a guide since they tend to load down ammo in a lot of cases. The Remington guide is a waste of time.

270 not in the running? Hmm I know a lot of people that use a 270 win on deer and Elk ..i guess they need to go to their freezers and tell the elk and deer that they are not really dead.

Thats because the BAR was made of Steel and has a real walnut stock on it. If one jams it is user error plain and simple. I have never experienced a jam on 1/2 dozen of the things in all kinds of nasty weather.

Oldelkhunter is probably the same goofball that got booted off a while back. Chanteclear or something. He is always looking for an arguement by spouting nonsense. Best to not respond to him. Same B.S. as last year that a 300 Win Mag will out perfrom the 300 WSM. I believe last year he said that while the 300 WSM was quicker out the muzzle, the 300 Win Mag was faster at longer distances. Pure rubbish and he is obviously an idiot.
I still haven't decided which to go with but am leaning toward the 300WSM though the 270 WSM is a little flatter shooting with a bit less wind drift.
