I must differ a bit with those who say the 308 is the equal of the 30-06.. There is a 200-250 fps difference with the 06 having the edge. That is the same difference as there is between a 30-06 and a 300 Win Mag. That being said, the difference between the 270 and the 270 WSM is also 200-250 fps favoring the short mag. I would pick the 30-06 for bigger game over the others. However the 270 and 308 are up to the task. When all is said and done shot placement is what counts regardless of what you shoot, pop gun or cannon. Man nearly wiped out all wildlife before there was a Magnum cartridge invented. I respect your desire to stay with the middle calibers and rely on your ability to hit your target.
