That is actually the gun I am thinking the most about. A guy I work with has the 30/30 version with the scope rings that allow you to use you open sights too.

Now the hard part....the wife!

Have you looked at the the new Ruger lever rifles? I used the auto for years and found it to be a great litttle rifel, short and fast . It is scope ready (drilled and tapped).

H&R makes a handirifle in 44 mag and 45 long colt. A very inexpensive, but capable gun. Either round would be great for deer.

I see on Indiana's regulations that we can use a rifle that shoots a pistol cartrige this year. It says it has to be .357 or larger with a case length min of 1.16" and max of 1.625".

Does it take a special rifle to fire these bullets, or is an off the shelf rifle ok?

What rifles would fire a 357 mag or a 44 mag?
A Marlin 1994 in .357 or .44 Mag., or .45 Colt,a Winchester M94 in .44 Mag., or aLegacy Arms Puma Model 92 style in .45 Colt or .454 Casull. Now, that .454 is a pistol cartidge that you could use on grizzly bears!

H&R makes a Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W Magnum. It's a wicked round out of a revolver, and would be even more potent out of a rifle. It'd be hard to beat.

The H&R seems like an option. Dicks can get them but they are 5-6 weeks lead time. Does anyplace stock them?

Are they also under the name New England Rifles?

Yes. The Handi-Rifles are made by Harrington & Richardson (H&R), which also uses the trade name New England Firearms for these rifles. I've seen them marketed under both brand names, although it seems like they use the NEF brand more for the shotguns, while they use the H&R brand for the rifles. Recently, Marlin bought out H&R and continues to make both brands.

If you Google "New England Firearms", you get the H&R website at the top hit.

I have a Ruger model 96, which is the semi. It comes with a factory flip up peep sight and scope rings. It shoots very well the peep sight.

Made a mistake. Its the "deerfield" not the lever action 96.
