I'm in the process of making a long distance rifle, for the 400-500 yard shot. I don't want a small caliber. Will be used mainly for targets. I've found a few guns I like a little better, but this Varmit style gun is in my price range(around $600). Do you guys think this is a good choice?

Yes the VLS is and excellent base gun with a great barrel, and trigger system, thus ridding you the need to spend money in this region and can focus on base and rings and optics, now trigger work on this gun turns out great if your smith knows what he`s doing, and the barrel just needs polishing of feed ramp polish chamber and recrown, also float the barrel and you to will keep up with the big boys.
