What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I'm making the assumption that most posters to this board are men. So my question is, what does the wife or girl friend (if there is one)say or think about you buying yet another rifle or generally spending time and money on your hoby of shooting and/or hunting? Are you always 100% honest with her?
In my case I'd say she is very tolerant and understanding of my indulgences but I must admit I'm not 100% candit all the time. I have been know to take advantage of the fact she is not well informed on the value of stuff nor does she have a good account of the inventory so to speak. For instance I do have a couple of rifles in the safe that just sort of appreared there and a new scope or two from time to time is not real obvious. Am I alone in this? Do some share all with the little woman? Is this dishonest or just being creative to avoid a hassle? What do you say???? Maybe we can have some fun with this! RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
my girlfriend is not to happy with me buying guns and hunting every weekend. but i told her before we went out that when hunting comes she will not see me.

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
My wife is very understanding of the whole deal. She understands that this is what I do and if she doesn't like it she knows where the door is. Seriously, she complains alot but knows when I can't take much more. I do tell a white lie every now and then just to keep things calm. Yesterday I made a trip to Bass Pro and spent $200. Told her I spent $75 and hid most of it in the gun safe so it will kinda show up later. I'm getting ready to order a new scope but she knows about that.

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I guess I lucked out (sort of). My wife has insisted that the nest gun we buy is for HER! She has already siezed my 10/22 as her own, but she wants a Savage .223 target rifle because she is tired of shooting at 50 yards. She loves to shoot, and she's remarkably good at it. She'll shoot black out of a 1" bullseye at 50 yards inside of 50 shots.
She's also talked about coming with me deer hunting next year (so much for my week away from the ball and chain, eh). RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
My wife likes to hunt and shoot. Several of our first dates were prarie dog shoots. She shoots very well both rifle and handgun. Where we differ is the fact that she is very happy with her one deer rifle and does not see any need to try other guns. I like to try them all and have pretty much done so. She gets a little disturbed now and then but She knows me pretty well and when I decide to get a new gun or other toy she know there is no use to complain. I do however also try to make sure that she gets what she wants too although she doesn,t ask for much. She had seven sisters and three brothers so they grew up without much. I sometimes tell her that I put a gun or something on layaway then if she takes it pretty well I go back and do it. If not I say oh I was just jokeing. I am sure she has caught on to that one too.
I had a friend who used to buy a new gun and then had me bring it to his house and he would tell his wife that he was working on it for me. He even brought new guns home taken apart in a bucket or box and tell her the same story. |

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Wife? I can't even find a girl friend that will stay past the first time I come home all bloody and muddy with a dead animal in the back of the jeep. "sweetie, we'll have to stop by the processer's on the way to the movie. I would give you a hug but I don't want to stain your shirt.". I almost got married once, and then I came to my senses. I learned early on, if they don't like your hunting, it won't be long until it's over. You just have to be yourself with women, and let them know that this is who you are, and that you are not going to change.

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Well so far she has never said a word in 33 years of marriage .I guess that I've been lucky in that respect .
|
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
how do all you guys do it??
i wanted to get another gun and she got mad and said she might have to asess our relation ship if i did. it seems it only works if i get another one and trade in one though. i would like to know how i can get away with it without doing what my father has to do by hiding it? ahhh the days of being single !!! |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Quilly, I am by no means an expert. But it seems to me like you need to explain to her that YOU are using YOUR OWN money, that you set asside for yourself to do with what you want. And if buying a new gun is what you want, then it is your buisness to do so. As long as you are spending your "spending" money and not dipping into the kid's collage, or "emergency" money or something like that, then buying a new gun is not hurting anything in anyway. It is a fairly safe investment as you can re-sale a gun fairly easily if need be, a better investment than buying something like beer that will be gone in a few weeks along with your money never to be seen again. And about any gun will outlast any of us. You know what I mean?

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
My girlfriend is pretty good. She'll harass me in a joking manner every so often but otherwise she's good with it. She even talked ME, into a real expensive treestand over a cheaper model.
|
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
My wife wants to learn how to shoot. So, it's not really a problem for me. She also wants to learn how to bowhunt, and I told her that I wanted to teach her how to shoot a rifle first. (Didn't dampen her desire, though!)

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Hmm, maybe that's why I have an ex...wife.
|
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
My wife has never given me a problem when it come to buying firearms or hunting. She knew from the begining and I told her when we first started going out..."nothing interfears with hunting and fishing" She's lived up to that. She bought me my first gun safe and a 1911 45 for christmas one year and even splurge when she was still my girlfriend and got me a dozen LL Bean decoys to add to the almost 200 I had at the time.
Hey ,as long as one's not broke and can afford it I don't see a problem. |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Seems like I'm lucky in this dept. My girl comes from a family of hunters and doesnt mind when I go out. She no enthusiasts but doesnt give me any problems bout it. But just like anything else I can't spend ALL my time on hunting or other hobbies. We got kids and they have to come first.

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I've been married for 16 years and have purchased a grand total of 3 firearms since I said "I do." My wife is of the opinion that you need 1 gun for hunting and you should be able to kill anything with that gun. Had to explain to her the difference between a rifle and shotgun. So agreed that there was a difference and relented that maybe you need 2 firearms for hunting.
In all fairness she has mellowed over the years and I figure that I'm about due for a new addition. |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
MY long term GF bitches and whinnes alittle during hunting season witch runs from sep to feb for me then alittle more during 3D seson witch runs from about feb to sep. But I did these things before she meet me and will do them as long as I can, On the other hand I could be a drunk or a gambler which would leave me with nothing to show for or to eat for the money I spend.

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I always try to be honest. It works about 75 % of the time.. You have to put it to women so they understand. Tell that loved one that guns are like shoes. One pair of sensible black shoes will go with every outfit and every outing. If they are willing to give up there shoes .... find another.
|
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I've been on both sides of the coin.My now ex wife knew I liked hunting and shooting and there was no problem with that. Then once the I do's were done she wanted me to sell my guns, that I only need a couple of guns at the most.I couldn't handle that abuse LOL.She's gone and my toys are still here.Honesty is the best policy unless you're married to a person who can't understand normal thinking. In that case Reebok her and start over.

My wife doesn't have a problem with me buying guns, she has the attitude the more we have the better. Unfortunately money matters get in the way, or I would have alot more than I do. Hunting is a little different, she doesn't mind deer hunting time, but when I spend alot of time small game or bird hunting she gets a bit cranky.

Some of you are describing mothers...not wives. For crying out loud...if you work and have some extra cash, you're not hurting anybody.
Next time she complains, just lay out all your shoes on one side of the room, and all hers on the other. END-OF-STORY |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
As long as we have the money no problem. She thinks shooting and hunting is better than sitting in bars or gambling. She use to hunt until we had kids. Now I take both boys out{another excuse to buy more guns.

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Hey guys, we're getting off track a bit. I think we have pretty well established there is some differences in what the little women will or will not tolerate or how much she agrees or disagrees with us spending time and $$$ on our addiction. What about the question: are we always honest with her? Do we from time to time sneak a new rifle into the safe? do we add a new set of binoculars to the inventory without telling her? Did the scope that cost $500.00 get reduced in value to $300.00 by the time we got it home? Does she know that 300 Win Mag Supreme Partition Gold's costs a little more (a lot more) than .30.30 Power Point's? What do you'll say?? gg.
"When I was born I was so surprised I couldn't talk for a year and a half" |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
No,I never hide anything from her and tell her exactly how much it will cost.
|
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I generally reduce the cost by a third to a half when I'm specificly asked what the cost was. Most often things "appear". After all she is the first one to admit that every gun looks the same to her.
|
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Well my wife has hunted in the past and she even bought me a gun for Christmas once (a Rem 7600 pump, .35 whelen). Once I heard her state one of the deep pilosophical questions we all contemplate"How many guns does one man need?"
Back to the quesion, I never lie about my guns. Like a couple weeks ago she saw the T/C encore 209X50 that I bought last Sept. "Is that a new gun" says she. "No its the inline that I've had for awhile, shot that pronghorn with it last Oct." says I. |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
i have no problem buying anything and she don't mind the hunting and fishing she just gets a little upset when i don't showup for chirstmas, thanksgiving , weddings or any other function during hunting season or pre and post scouting , archery events etc.

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
My wife calls all the hunting and shooting supplies "her retirement fund". Says she will sell all the gear and travel.
Her common response to a planned hunting trip is "Don't you think that going away for two weeks is better than going for just one?" She says the time I'm away hunting is time for herself to do what she wants. I keep a spread sheet in the computer with the gear and what it was worth when I bought it. She can look anytime she likes. This also gives her an idea of what stuff is worth when it is time to dispose of it. I don't want to see her taken advantage of when I'm gone. John G, Sounds like you had a wonderfull wife and sorry on your loss. |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
Goodguy I could not have said it better myself. My wife is supportive of my shooting and hunting habits and I do not tell her what I have in stock and I do sneak stuff in on occasion.

After 33 years together I can't hide anything from her.She knows me to well. |

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
O.K. guys I've read your post's and tey are great. I won't claim to be Don Juan or a bad guy but I have found a way to deal with this problem! I have only been married 3 1/2 years all of which were not feeled with absolute joy and bliss, but we are better than ever. I handled the guns and hunting issue like this. 1). I tried to get her involved. did not work ( it hurt her ears, scared her and th powder stunk! well next I tried ignoring the problem and going on as usual, bad chose. hunting s man's only desire, boy did the season on that end quick. so finally I did this. I decided to show her a little romance, took her shopping once in awhile without whinning and did what se wanted done around the house in the slow season ( all of which, contrary to popular belief did not kill me !) I know guys right now your thinking is this guy nutz, a pansy or has my wife just signed in as nightmare68! none of the above, just a guy who does whatit takes to complete the hunt! after all who on this page hasn't done just about whatever it takes to bg that trophy? Just one more thing to do! ohhh and by the way cooking great recipes for the little lady from time to time sure helps to. A glass of wine, my favorite amoretto vension recipe, and some merle haggard and the season was open again, this time with no limits, point restrictions or regultions. Made it easier to hunt without all of that extra ammo, if you know what I mean. And by the way she bought me a new.338 brownig a-bolt for christmas. must've worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!
remember god could have made you anything, be glad he made you AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!! |

RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
mY WIFE ENCOURAGES ME TO BUY HUNTING STUFF.
iF I SEE A NEW RIFLE THAT LOOKS GOOD MY WIFE WILL INSIST THAT I GET IT. sHE TEMPS ME TOO MUCH. i DONT LIKE TO GO INTO SPORTING GOODS STORES WITH HER ANYMORE BECAUSE SHE ALWAYS PRESSURES ME INTO BUYING SOMETHING. WHEN I BUY A NEW TREE STAND SHE ACTUALLY GETS EXCITED. gUESS IM PRETTY LUCKY. |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I have been married for 14 years and my wife still does not like me hunting. She doesn't mind me buying "toys" for hunting. She hates the fact that I will be away all of the weekends from her. She is getting a little better because me son is of age and I can bring him with me.
She still thinks anybody who gets up that early in the morning, sits in a tree for hours on end on cold days, and spends the amounts of money I spend on hunting is STUPID. I don't disagree. She says that I can stay home, get laid, and she will cook steak and I will come out cheaper and be smarter. I told her I was stupid when she married me and I ain't gittin any smarter. |
RE: What Does Your Wife Think Of...........?
I'm pretty honest with the wife but not quite 100%. A fellow gun aficionado suggested to me that if I start to feel guilty about my purchases, to look in my wife's closet for a quick inventory. I haven't had to do that yet but I get the picture!
