30-06 going away
I have read on several post latly that the 30-06 is going away. This is laughable. THe round has been around for almost 100yrs has taken just about anything you care to mention. ammo is ever where it will handle anything in north america. (granted Id carry more gun for anything that hunts back) But to think just because there alot of hot new .30 calibers out there dont for a second think its going away. I bet they said the same thing when the .300 win mag came out. SO for you new guys looking for there 1st big game rifle dont sell the old 30-06 short its still king in most deer camps. Thanks for letting me vent.:)

RE: 30-06 going away
I would have to agree also except the "almost 100 years". Actually it's been 100 years. Was talking about that this morning. The wonderful and grand Springfield 1903 is now 100 years old

RE: 30-06 going away
My first wife's father and brother always disagreed with my desire to own a 30-06. The were big on the .243 and 270 because they are flat shooters. Now I have to give them credit. They have taken piles of deer over the years, and I have killed just one medium sized doe with a crossbow. But I finally bought that 30-06 this year. And I don't have any regrets. Someday, I hope to hand it down to one of my sons or one of my grandkids. If you put in the time to learn how to shoot the weapon, and you learn how to adjust for distance, the 30-06 is capable of taking game far beyond the average hunters ability to shoot.

RE: 30-06 going away
I read an article on how the'06 was going to disappear - and that was in 1954!! Well, it hasn't happened yet! I don't expect this to ever happen, as long as current types of firearms are still in use!!

OOPS!!!
I got to thinking. The Springfield 03' wasn't chambered in 30-06 at first. It was chambered in the 30-03. So I went to looking.... http://www.chuckhawks.com/30-06.htm The 30-06 is only 97 years old. It was made in 1906. The link is some good reading in case your interested. "A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user." RE: 30-06 going away
The idea of the 3006 disappearing is about as goofy as pretending the 22 rimfire might go away. The only way for these cartridges to go away is if everything goes away. The anti gun bozo's would certainly love to see that, but as long as we can own guns, the 3006 will be here. Then again, 97 years isnt very long, maybe its just a fad and a marketing ploy to try to sell more guns?

RE: 30-06 going away
I used to make the argument that the .30-06 wasn't ideal for any type of hunting...it was just adequate for a lot of hunting.
I still believe that's true. There's been a helluva lotta cartridges come and go in that time (since 1906) and the .30-06 is still very high in sales all over the country. There's probably more of them sitting in closets throughout the United States than the next ten contenders put together. (except the .30-30) and for darn good reason.....it works again and again and it don't seem to make any difference what you're hunting.....it works. For those that say it's going away.....maybe but it's clearly not the opinion of a lot of posters here!!!! |
RE: 30-06 going away
i love the 30.06..its a great round...lets face it..if your not a long range(400+yds) hunter you dont need a magnum at all..i love hte guys that spend the extra money and take the extra recoil to have that magnum here in PA...my farthest shot on a deer was ooo abotu a whole 40 yards...im considering going to a 20 cal because the 3006 hits like a brick at that range..i will never sell my 06 though...forget the 20...im not out there to have a deer run and dont care about the ounces of meat it ruins..i love that round...drops em where they stand...very accurate if u play around...and has a good range...200yds you are still good iwth a 100yd zero...400 i think it only falls 36inches which isnt bad at all if you can do a little math and hold high or sight in that far...i agree anything in NA isnt very safe if i have a 3006 in my hands...i would take on a grizzly with it...the head in like 30 or more inches i duno exactly ive never seen one but its huge...i put on in there and i beat he never moves again..and if you cant hit say even a 20 inch circle at say 100 yds you need practice! if i won a trip to hunt griz id take the mauser in 06...no need to buy another rifle for that one time hunt....i think it will be around forever...

RE: 30-06 going away
I think the 30-06 will go away about two weeks after Hillary Clinton and Chuck Shumer donate thier years salary to the NRA. On that same day Al Gore will admit that Bush won the election fair and square. Bill O'riely will join the Rainbow Push society. Tom Daschel will personally recomend that all the Bush appointments should be confirmed right away. And last but not least. Gobbler A will join the GOP. Therefore I predict that the 30-06 will have a long long life.
