As far as a long range rifle it's well up to the task if you work up a load for the job and sight it in accordingly. I personally load Hornady 130grn Spire points and have taken deer from close range out to 300yds consistently and a couple past that range. I have my rifle sighted in 3" high at 100yds at 200yds it's still 1" high at 250yds it's dead on and at 300yds it's about 6" low. It drops em like a rock and the several that have ran didn't run very far at all. In my opinion the 30.06 is a great all round caliber.

Where I hunt in central PA, the average shot is no more than 30-50 yds and the long being 100-125 yds, there are occasional fields with a 200 yd shot. The crew that I hunt with consist of 8 guys and 2 wifes. While not everyone hunts with the same caliber all have at least 1 30-06 in their safe and was the primary rifle for all northeast/southeast hunting at one time or another. I think if your going to be taking the long shots on the average over 300 yds then go ahead and use the magnum, even then I don't think you need more than a 7mm mag or a 300 winmag.

Gosh "elde" 1954 was the year I was born, makes me feel old. I have an "old" .30-06 and love it. Don't forget the military application of this cartridge over the years everybody. The round is here to stay. It will be here to show much more longevity than the 16 gauge even with the onset of the new short magnums. It leads the market in reloader die sales each year for the simple reason of its popularity.

i own two myself, one is a 06 sporterized springfield, and the other is a mid 50's remington 740woodsmaster, god i love those rifles

Yes. it's absolutely true that there are armies all over the world still running around with M1's, BAR's, and Browning .30 MG's!!
