7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I have a hard decision to make. im looking at both the the 7mm-08 and the 308. I know the 7mm-08 is .284 diameter bullet, smaller ammo variety, shoots real flat, quicker than the 308, and less recoil(dont care bout recoil, just want a good shooting round). Some iffy things i wonder about is smaller wound chamber and knockdown power
the 308 has more variety, and heavier bullets My main questions are: Knockdown capabilty, best factory loads, and overall opinions on these rounds Please help me out all you can ive shot a 30-06with 150gr corelockts all my life and its proven again and againbut i just want to try something different-- i will be hunting deer, mostly under 100 yards, and in not too heavy brush |

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
Buddy on deer you (or them) will never know the difference.
My brother has used a 7mm-08 since the early 80s has killed better than a hundred whitetails with and a black bear, all with 140gr CoreLokts... If you have 2 guns in a rack and like the fit and finish on one verses the other, or one just feels better because they are different models, etc. That's the one I'd choose.... I like a walnut stocked gun, I have handled a Remington CDL in 7mm-08, its one of the best balanced bolt actions that I have ever picked up...If you are ordering, I'd go with a 7mm-08, simply because there should be slightly less recoil, shoots just a tad flatter and I know I can bum shells off my brother, if need be....;) |

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
Hi cj,
Welcome to the forums. Hunting deer at 100 yards or less? Between those 2, it really doesnt matter. I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear and maybe someone will post some ballistic numbers that shows one being slightly faster, more energy etc etc etc..But in reality with what you are going to do with that gun, any difference doesn't amount to a hill of beans. |
RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I got a 7mm-08 and love it.. A lot less recoil than the 308.. Since you already have a 30 cal, I would go for something different. I try and space my calibers out a little.. Got a 22-250,243,7mm-08 and 444 Marlin.. Next ones will be a 260 and a 308..

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I just bought a remington 700 in 7mm-08 and its the best gun I've ever shot! Sighted it in monday and could not be happier. It has a realy smooth recoil. I posted these pics before but I'll let you take a look at them!

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
cj....All that was said before is true......the deer will never be able to appreciate what it was shot by. I also own and shoot both those cartridges, but have really come to love the 7-08. Since you already have the 30 cal., I think you made the right choice, in my mind
Also, welcome aboard!! |
RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I used to own a Browning BLR in 308 and at
50 yard sight in I could put 5 shots all cutting into the same hole very easily.I was shooting the 150 grain winchester ballistic silvertips. This is by far the most accurate caliber that I have ever shot.I am sure that is why the U.S. military still uses this round.I like it because of all the different grain bullets that are available to shoot.I am a deep woods hunter and this short action round was so good for that purpose so I could use a light rifle with superb knock down power.Good success in what ever you decide to go with. RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I can't see the need for a 30-06 and a 308. In your case the 7MM-08 makes good sense.
