RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
ORIGINAL: James B I can't see the need for a 30-06 and a 308. In your case the 7MM-08 makes good sense. |
RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
About the only complaints I have about my 7-08's wouldbe the fact that I had to pay for them ;)

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
Ditto to James B. I own both, and love both of them. I prefer the .308 - but since you own an 06, I would go with the 7-08.

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
A good hard stare will kill a deer under 100 yards.. I like that!

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I agree and disagree that theres not much difference b/t the 06' and .308. I agree that theres not much if any difference in the preformance of the ammo. However, I disagree that if you have an 06' that you would be "wasting your money" on a .308. A .308 is lighter. Shorter barrel. Shorter action. For these reason They are (IMO) A lot better stand gun than a 06'. |
RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
They are both amazing guns and will definetly do the job on deer under and way passed 100 yards. I own a remington 788 in .308 and love it, i started using it regularly last year when i got tired of caring my 7mm mag. Im now considering getting a 7mm-08 too. I have heard nothing but good things about them, plus with the lighter recoil its something my wife can shoot too. The long slender bullets of the .284 family are great for penetration and mated to a short action, proven round like the .308 cartridge you cant go wrong. You will be happy with whatever you choose.

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I know that you said recoil does not really matter, and I believe you. But, there is nothing like a mild mannered smooth shooting, easy handling gun that you have a lot of confidence in. I think that is the biggest plus for the 7mm-08.I don't have one, but I have shotone and it is really nice. That is probably why everybody I know who shootsthe 7mm-08 really likes it.

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I've been using a 7mm mag as my primary deer gun for the last 20 years. I picked up a 7-08 for my son to start hunting with. I really like the balistics and though you are not concerned with recoil (never have been either, esp. with a deer in the crosshairs), the 7-08 shoots so smooth (like I said I'm used to shooting the 7 mm mag). I also have a .308 which I like also but I find the balance a little better with the 7-08. (then again could be model of guns- .308 Rugar, 7-08 Rem).

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I have both. I prefer the 7mm-08. Actually, I prefer it by a mile. I am really in love with this caliber.

RE: 7MM-08 vs. .308 WIN
I'll be getting a new gun shortly myself, and the .7mm-08 has my fancy as well. Trying to decide betweena Savage or the Remington.;)
