RE: H&R ULTRA SLUG OR REM 870 ?

just because you said an "all around" gun i would say the 870 since its a repeater. H&R's are tack drivers in the slug world tho. but my 870WM with a hastings barrel is also very accurate out to 100 shooting buckhammers and hastings slugs

RE: H&R ULTRA SLUG OR REM 870 ?

I guess it depends on what kind of hunting you do. If you stalk hunt the 870 is a better choice, if you still/stand hunt the H&R is better. All around I would go with the 870. I primarily hunt deer from a fixed/stand position soI hunt with an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe 12ga....very accurate slug gun....very.

RE: H&R ULTRA SLUG OR REM 870 ?

i would say the H&R because i like single shots, if you are only using it for deer, go with the single if you might decide sometime to use it for birds or rabbits or somthing go with the 870

RE: H&R ULTRA SLUG OR REM 870 ?

I have both, and I prefer my H&R The 870 kicks like a raped mule, but it is good for deer drives (multiple shot's)

Im a fan of the one shot one kill method

I thought that H&R 12ga.slug guns kick more than anything else.

Given the "all around" requirement, I'd have to say the 870. I both stand hunt by myself and group hunt. I love the H&R, but when a group is driving a herd past...multiple shots/multiple deer.

RE: H&R ULTRA SLUG OR REM 870 ?

well so far I have an awesome bird gun,so I realy don't need the combo I know the 870 is a good gun but 99% of my hunting would be off a stand, and I could save alot of money going with the H&R also.........Ted

Ted, if you already have a great bird gun, then I agree go with the H&R....where are you located?

Bucksnortinted, my vote is definately with the H & R Ultra slughunter deluxe. I have the 12 gauge version, and would recommend the 20 gauge instead. Cut down on the pounding your shoulder takes. I love my 12, but don't need to be shooting slugs that weight 400 grains, 260 grainers will kill deer just fine.

RE: H&R ULTRA SLUG OR REM 870 ?

BOWHUNTERCOP,Sorry I have'nt replied sooner,I am going to go with the H&R Ultra Slug, most of my hunting will be out of a stand or a blind,I can also get a good deal on a nikon prostaff scope which has a good review on it,I can get a 3x9x50 for $149.95 NIB. I want the zeiss conquest 3x9x50 but it's $500.00 and I just don't have the money right now but things could change in a week, buy the way I'm in Muskegon.MI.

FOLLOWER,Sorry I did'nt get back to you in order,I'm not really sure If I would be happy with a 20ga. I think I want that extra ump, just a little more nockdown,Not that there is anything wrong with the 20ga. actually it's probally a little more accurate than the 12ga. but the 12 probally has a lot more nockdown at 150yds. if I was shooting a 100yds. or under I would take the 20ga...............Ted

Well, you thought wrong. Seeings how the gun weighs roughly 9 pounds the weight alone sucks up plenty of the recoil. In addition, the H&R USHs come with a fantastic recoil pad.

matt is right i have the turkey gun in a 12 now that gun kicks worse than anything, almost nocked my 250 pound uncle over, it weights 6 pounds+ 3 inch turkey load=dead should+dead turkey.

i think the H&R's barrels are made from 10ga. barrel blanks, giving them the extra thickness and weight. i am really considering the purchase of a 12ga. barrel for my encore, i have a 3x9x40 conquest that needs a home :) would be a great stand gun!

it is the same but probaly cheaper and kicks more because it dosnt weigh as much. i am getting the tracker 2 in a 20 because it is cheaper and pretty much the same.

i have a Remington 870 witha 18" rifled barrel with a cantilever scope mount, also have the 28" barrel for bird hunting,i shoot the Hornady SST 300 gr sabot, it is sighted in at 150 yards and will shoot 1" groups
i love this gun, but it kicks very hard, but that is only when sighting it in, never notice the kick when shooting at a deer

Boywonder & Millerhunter 13

The tracker 2 is not equipped with a Bull barrel like the Ultra Slug hunter and are equipped with rifled sights.

1" group @ 150 yards? so your saying you have a sub MOA slug gun? i highly doubt that any 870 or slug gun for that matter will conistantly shoot .75 MOA

Here is the way I see it after 40+ years of Whitetail hunting: The H&R Ultraslug is by far the more accurate gun of the two . . . especially once you have found which sabot slug it likes best. Granted, the 870 will give you the opportunity for quicker second shots but in my experience (29 Whitetails over my lifetime), after the first shot, the deer is either down . . . or gone! I own an 11-87 with a rifled cantilevered barrel and an H&R UltraSlug. Both guns are 12 ga. and both guns have 3x9 Nikon Slughunter scopes mounted. My 11-87 is a backup gun for me. I have never seen a more accurate slug gun than the H&R Ultraslug . . . especially at distances. At 100 yds, my Ultraslug consistently shoots a single ragged hole for a 3-shot group from a sandbagged benchrest. At 150 yds, I can consistently shoot sub-3 inch groups from that same sandbagged benchrest. My only compalints were the recoil when shooting the 3" Winchester Partitioned Gold sabots my Ultraslug likes best and the weight of the outfit itself. I solved those problems with a LimbSaver recoil pad . . . it still kicks but it isn't painful now and by hunting from a stationary well built tree stand. My farthest ranged kill so far is 154 yds and the 6-point dropped where it stood when I squeezed the trigger. I strongly recommend getting a good rangefinder if you will be hunting field edges with the potential for more distant shots. I also recommend getting a Nikon Slughunter scope and finding the slug your gun likes best . . . those things make all the difference. I invested in a Nikon Riflehunter 550 rangefinder and it eliminates all the guessing at distance. Together with the BDC reticle in the 3x9 Nikon Slughunter scope, I wouldn't hesitate to take a 200 yd. shot from the treestand at the edge of my field. If you are prepared for the far shots, you'll make them! I must also give a great deal of credit to the 3" Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs my H&R UltraSlug seems to favor. They really reach out! Since getting my H&R Ultraslug my 11-87 has become strictly a backup for hunting and a home defense goto gun. Now I hunt from a well built treestand 100% of the time but I have killed my deer from that same stand 9 years running, so I think it would be foolish to change the way I do things. It is just that I know I can make those distance shots since putting my H&R UltraSlug outfit together.
