Best 30-30 Caretridge for black bear

I know that its probably not the best choice but its what I have and I am sure that it is capable of doing the job if I put the bullet in the right place.

I was planning on shooting the Remmington 170g CORE-LOKT as it shoots well out of my lever gun. Is that a good choice? I am open to other suggestions and I look forward to your input.

Thanks,

HH

The Remington 170gr. Core-Lokts will work for black bear. Plus you now they shoot good out of your gun. That more confidiece in your shooting ability to place the shot where it needs to be.

I don't know anything about bears or bear hunting, but on 200-300 lb. Texas hogs, the new Hornady LeverEvolution 160 grs have worked great. Every one that my son and I have killed have been complete pass thru and have dropped on the spot.

I'd say the Federal 170gr factory loaded with Nosler Partition

Leverevolutions! They make a world of difference in my 35 rem. IMO Hornady stumbled onto a gold mine when they brought these out. They really breath new life into the lever action.

IF your rifle shoots well with the 170-grain Core-Lokt, then use it! I would prefer a 170-grain bullet for bear, and would see how well the factory loads using the Barnes X or the Nosler Partition bullet shoot in my gun. However, at .30/30 velocities, the Core-Lokt bullets will work-just hit them right!

Thanks for all of your input. I have to make preseason trip to the range next week and I will try some of these suggestions.

Thanks,

My vote is to use that load too, as it shoots well and as was said, at 30-30 V they will do fine...

When i was a kid, my dad took me out to a high spot in a big blueberrymarsh, waaay before daylite, and sat me by a tree to wait for a bear to come along. Ihad a30-30 loaded with 170 Rems in my hands, as i leaned against that tree waiting for daybreak....

I probably sat there 1/2 hr.before it started to break daylight, and it was absolutely "dead quiet", no wind or anything... I sat there quietly, and all of a sudden several grouse flew out of the tree i was leaning on!!!Idamn near filled my pants... ha ha ha

I'll never forget that day, ever.... :D
