New Rifle
Well I am in a shotgun only as of now, but that may change within the next two years, and i was wondering what would be a good rifle to get. Max distance I'd need would be 200 yards. I was thinkin maybe a 25-06 but not sure, not really familiar with rifles. any help?
was possibly thinkin about getting whatever it is in a T/C Encore form, and dont know about scopes |
RE: New Rifle
You really cant go wrong with most high powered rifled at 200 yards or less i would say, 270 is what i shoot, so when i say i would get a 270 i guess its based on that, lol , Heck my buddy killed one at 300 + this year with his 243, dropped in its tracks, get a good rifled, get to know your gun, and u will be set. One thing i would like to say though... i wouldnt go with a caliber just cause its bigger, dead is dead is dead, all day long, shot placment is the key :)

RE: New Rifle
.243 - 25-06- or 7mm-08, those would be my choices.

RE: New Rifle
.243 would be pretty good and you could use it for varmints also.

RE: New Rifle
ORIGINAL: goos_blues .243 would be pretty good and you could use it for varmints also. 200 yards max and deer sized the options are large. Something to consider maybe checking local area for ammo selection(assuming you won't be reloading), this may help narrow the field somewhat. Just a thoughtseeing you are thinking about an encore platform have you consider a 50 cal ML barrel?? Being you live in a shotgun area it is likely it can be used now and in the future you could always add CF barrels if desired. As an ML capable to reach 200 yards with practice and finding the right load combo! PS forgot re:scopes. I am of the thinking scopes and mounts are not the place to save a few bucks. For a big game rig I like a starting point of the bushnell elites or equiv (approx 200.00) and going up to whatever your eye, heart and budget can allow. As far as the mounts go I personally like/trust Leupold and Warne Maxima. The majority of my biggame CF's wear Leupold Double Dovetail's.If an ML is of interets I suggestlooking atWarne Maxima Quick Release, IME excellent on my inlines &highly reccomended. Good Luck |
RE: New Rifle
.270 and in Remington 700...or 710 both great guns 710 is what I have more affordable and more accurate than my friends 700..

RE: New Rifle
I'll leave the caliber up to you, but with deer hunting I like to have a semi aoutomatic. It just has that assurance that if you need to get a second shot off it is there very quickly. For this action the Benelli R1 is an amazing rifle. My Father bought one in .308 and heabsolutely loves it. It also cycles like a machine gun:D:D, well not really but it is super fast. Plus it has the accuracy to punch 1'' MOA groups out to the distances you want to shoot. Check their website to see the calibers it comes in if your interested. Good Luck.

RE: New Rifle
There are so many choices for deer... and for anything of that matter. Let's see... the .243 is great deer rifle for beginners and doesn't deliver as much kick as say a .270 or .30-06. But, the .270 has one of the flattest trajectories on the market. The .30-30 would be a great brush gun, but with a maximum range of 200 yds, which I wouldn't even feel comfortable with. The 7mm-08 has an extremely wide selection of bullets, with ballistics similar to the 7mm, just with a little less kick, and it shoots about 200 fps slower thana .270...
There are so many choices out there, and a number of factors play out. Do some homework on a wide variety of calibers and decide for yourself what is best for you. BTW, most hunters use the .270, .30-06, and the .308. I use a .270 and 7mm-08. |
RE: New Rifle
Amen on getting the best scope you can and not wasting your money on the cheap ones.
