Default .257 Roberts for Deer

What does everyone think of the 257 Roberts Caliber. It's new to me. Would it make a good deer rifle?
Thanks.

Its an excellent deer gun. I have used a couple of them. Both Remington bolt guns. I prefer 100 grain bullets in the Roberts though many like the 117 and 120 best. I have had excellent results with the old 100 grain Barnes X bullet and the 100 grain Nosler Ballistic tips.

Before I expatrated Texas 34 years ago, I used a Roberts a lot....used 100 gr Hornadys and it is excellent for whitetails!A little lite for Elk so I
went to a 06.Still have my ole m70 in the Rob, only punch paper with it now.

257 is a GREAT ROUND!

I think a solid 90-95% of deer hunters use too much gun. Elk, moose, and bear are different stories. I tend to like lighter kicking rifles in smaller than "traditonal" calibers.

My theory is the less you get beat up on the bench and at the range, the more enjoyable the shooting. The more enjoyable= more fun. More fun more practice. More practice and it's impossible to become a better shot. Better shot and caliber wars start to lose their punch.

Good bullet in a Good spot will put them down.

The .257 Roberts is one of the finest deer cartridges in existence.

The .257 Roberts is a superb deer rifle cartridge. So is the .250 Savage. Use 100 to 120-grain bullets for deer in both calibers.

Agreed. Using factory ammo, it's not quite up to.243 Win. performance, but still an excellent deer cartridge.

Question for the handloaders... Can you get much of a boost in performance from the .257 over the Winchester +P load?

Having used both the 257 Roberts and the 243 for deer, I would choose the Roberts in a heartbeat over the 243. Any advantage the 243 has is only on paper. I have not used any factory ammo in the Roberts but I load the 100 Grain X bullet to 3050 fps. I do use the +P WW brass. My wife does her deer hunting with the 250 Savage, another great deer round. My lower limit for deer is the 25 calibers.
