STAINLESS
If I buy a gun in stainless will it rust, or does stainless not rust? I have never owned a gun in stainless, and was just wondering. Probably going to get an SPS stainless with stainless nikon bckmaster scope.

RE: STAINLESS
SS rifles will rust. But it is very hard to get it to rust. It takes exposure for extended periods of time. I could be wrong but I do not know of any scopes made of SS. Tom.

RE: STAINLESS
The only difference between stainless and "blued" steel is that stainless steel has higher chromium content vs carbon steel which has more carbon in the steel. If you don't like the bright look of stainless you can have it bead blasted and then a high quality cured(baked) finish applied. Stainless look of scopes is acchived by leaving surface naked instead of being andonized.

RE: STAINLESS
try a matte-black scope on your stainless rifle. I had a silver scope on my Win70 stainless, but thought it was a little too much "silver". When I upgraded my scope, I changed to the black w/matte finish, and like the look much better.
I own a mix of SS and non-SS guns, and personally tend to like the SS better than blued when given a choice. |
RE: STAINLESS
what do you mean by extended exposure? Do you mean like outside orout of the gun cabinet in a corner?

RE: STAINLESS
From my experience, you would really have to abuse a SS gun to the point that it would rust... I have never had one rust, and I am not always the best at getting my guns cleaned/oiled in a timely manner.

RE: STAINLESS
No worries about rust. Use and and wipe it down like all your other guns. My cousin and uncle both have SPS rifles in 7mm Mag and .300 Win Mag respectively and they both like them. They have Buckmasters on their as well.

As far as stainless guns "rusting", it actually seems more of a "discoloration" than actual rust like on a blued gun, but yes, they will "rust". As I said before, I have several stainless guns, and they are about the only ones that ever get used anymore. I love the fact that the are alot more "maintenance free". |
RE: STAINLESS
Maybe they are just "stainless?" I had a M16 Savage that developed a very small but visible rust spot. I have had my:) Remington 700 ADL 270 in pouring rains and it has prevailed. I am not sold on them. Tried a silver Nikon on them and won't do it again. No problem with scopes function. I love the Nikon.:D:D

I think maybe he meant model 16 savage.

RE: STAINLESS
The above poster was referring to the Savage Model 16 rifle, which is a short action stainless synthetic rifle.
As for stainless rifles...I love them. But, even a stainless rifle will rust if it is notproperly maintained and oiled. Also, blued rifles hold up quite well "IF" they're properly oiled and maintained. RE: STAINLESS
IMO stainless is much over rated as an allweather material.
While barrel life is greater it's not as much more than we thought and it seems to me that the biggest asset we get in stainless is the lack of bluing required. Everyone to their own but my stainless rifles are sold! |
RE: STAINLESS
I like my stainless Ruger, got it for under $500 and it's a good feeling having a solid and durable rifle.

RE: STAINLESS
Yes, even stainless will rust, just not near as quickly or easily as most blued rifles. I too prefer a black scope with my stainless rifle. Since most scopes are made of aluminum you don't really have to worry about them rusting, but the rings sure will! Since I neglect my rifle more than I should that's the one spot I have to watch for rust. Most of the rust I see on my rifle is in areas like between the stock and metal where moisture can be held. Unlike my blued guns if it gets wet during a week of hunting I won't take it apart to clean, just leave it in a shop overnight where a wood stove is burning and that sucks all the moisture out of the rifle. I'll then clean it thoughly after the week of hunting. My blued guns had to be cleaned and oiled immediatly after coming in from the rain else they'd start to rust.
One other note about stainless is they are not as strong as blued. Not quite sure how that would affect anything, maybe shorter barrel life (5,000 rounds vs 10,000 - totally making those numbers up though). I'm sure someone else has more info on that aspect as I'm not metallurgist. ![]() |
