I want a good varmint gun, but nothing that is going to destroy pelts. And also something to shoot for target. Im not limited to just a .17 or .204, what other guns are good?

OK well then i would still recomend the 204. I love mine but im willing to try different calibers still. What kind of varmints are you hunting? A 223, 22-250, 243(with the right bullets), 17 HMR, 22 Mag, 204, 17 Rem Fireball, 22 Hornet, 222 Rem., 223 WSSM, 243 WSSM, 220 Swift. HTose are just a few off the top of my head. Imsure there are more. I would stick with the smaller calibers with smaller bullets for less pelt damage.

I have shot both and for just shooting Id take the 204. The 204 is still a little finicky in the wind but the 17 is EXTREMELY touchy in the wind. Id say the 204 ammo is probably cheaper as well.
