Winchester Pre-64 Question
I was always under the impressionthatin 1964 Win. went from tooling receivers to casting them in the model 70 rifles. Abuddy of mine tells me he has a model 94 30-30 Pre 64 , I say , oh well. Pre 64 only pertains to the model 70. Help me out on this, I am not certain of my facts. Thanks....

RE: Winchester Pre-64 Question
1964 saw changes to Winchester firearms other than the model 70. For instance the models 100 & 88 went from cut checkering to stamped checkering. There may have been other changes to the 100's & 88's as well. A pre-64 100 or 88 is much much more desirable than a 64 or later. I wish I could tell you specifically what changes were made to the model 94 in 1964 but I can't. The 94 evolved through many changes and variations since first introduced in 1894 and generally the earlier the model (depending on condition and other factors) the more desirable they are. However, a pre 64 model 94 is definitely more desirable than a 64 or later. Books have been written on Winchester lever guns. My knowledge is very limited. An authority on Winchester is George Madis. Two of his books are highly recommended; The Winchester Book and The Winchester Handbook. You can check out his website at the link below. gg.

RE: Winchester Pre-64 Question
Model 94, in 1964, went from having machined parts to stamped parts. You can tell the difference in the sound the action makes as you work it. A post-64 model 94 sounds like a BB gun when you work the action. It also seems to me that the tolerances are loser. In general, as has been said there was a dramatic and noticable drop in quality of manufacture for all models at that time.

RE: Winchester Pre-64 Question
I own a pre 64 winchester model 94. It was made in 1947 the serial number is around 1 and a half million. I have been offered up to 600 dollars from a dealer, it is in great shape and i have taken probably 20 deer with it.
