RE: .204 Ruger

I have bought one in a Rem 700 ADL and another in an encore. I sold the one 700 to my brother. Both shoot about the same accuracy, but this calbieri s better suited in a 700 or model 7.

I have a .204 in a CZ 527 varmiter, Its a nifty rifle that fits like a glove and is a pleasure to shoot.

If you handload, you might want to look into the .220 Swift, good long-distance cartridge. Ruger makes a good .220.

Or, if you still want that small cal., but want more ammo availability, get a .17 HMR. Marlin makes bolt-actions in that round.

Younggun, you don't like your 204? Or does your 220 do a better job?

I'm just giving other options, it's good to explore all your options when you're about to spend a hunk of dough.

I havent had a 204 Ruger but for a couple of months but so far I am quite pleased with mine. I went with CZ 527 Kevlar Varmint and it makes a dandy walking coyote gun and is accurate to boot. I made this post awhile back on the 204 Ruger http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1940554&mpage=1&key=?

Youggun243, have you had any experience with the 204 Ruger or for that matter the 220 swift? I could reccomend a 223 Rem in a Handi Rifle too for another option but the poster asked a specific question on dfferent makes of 204 Ruger rifles. Ok, ok, I was just wondering?[8D]

Not the .204, but my family has harvested many a varmit with the .220 Swift, but they got rid of it after they thought the cartridge was going extinct(before I was old enough toshoot) and my grandpa got a .22-250, which I shoot, and I know that thing is full of zip, and I've been told from close relativesthe .220 Swift has more.

Since I have no .204 experiance, I am showing what I do know.

Is a .204 even big enough for coyotes? I know the .17 HMR isn't ideal from just looking at the bullet.

I have a 17 hmr, is there a lot of difference in that and a 204

You can't even compare a 17HMR to a 204 Ruger!!!!

To answer your question, I have a buddy that has a 204 in a Savage and he says it shoots very very nice. I have not seen it shoot, but I do take his word. I have also seen the groups posted up on the CZ rifles. Very impressive!

I have a brother in law that has one.We shoot/hunt together all the time. If you didnt know it I am a .220swift man, And have also had a 22-250 for several years. When they introduced the .204 I took a long hard look at it. But it just did appeal to me.Now my brother in law like his alot, but I just dont see the point of a .20cal.Sure it will kill a yote, sure it is fast, but what is the advantage over a swift? It has been here since the 30's and is still the one always compared to when speed or varmint rifles are mentioned.I guess someone will have to show me something it will do that a 22-250/.220swift wont.As far as rifles I do like ruger rifles, they offer it in a M77MKII target grey and that rifle is pretty tough to beat. Here is mine.

the main reason I bought it, is barrel life. I figured I would test hornady/ruger's theory that it should have twice the barrel life as 220swift due to 1/3 less powder but BC of a 45-55gr bullet. Thats the reason I got it in a encore barrel. That way, I can just change out barrels, if I burn it up.

Do I buy that theory all together? No way, I like to test things out for myself.

I doubt I will be getting a bolt in a 204. Honestly, I think next varmit round will be a 22-250. I am having such a hard time cleaning this gun. One thing because the barrel hole is so small and second because its an encore. I can't really use a guide rod. So you got this cleaning rod, (tipton .17 cal rod), that bends and twists. I have been using wipeout to keep from using too muchof the cleaning rod.

There are alot of people who like CZ and Tikka for accuracy. I would get an encore or Ruger in that caliber for my new coyote gun. Always looking for an excuse to get another gun.;)
