Default AR15 vs AR10

Hey guys.... looking into getting a "homeland defense weapon" here in the very near future.... while we're still able to.

What are your opinions on AR15 .223vs AR10 .308? I was planning on getting a Bushmaster AR15... but we recently got a Armalite AR10 in a work.. and I'm really diggin the AR10. Just looking for some opinions from people that already own them? Are there any issues w/ the AR10?

It seems to me that in populated areas like IN or OH ect the 223 is the way better option. Also cheeper to shoot.
I use tons of the 22 caliber varmint bullets that are less likely to bounce than the 30 caliber heavy jacketed ones
My favorite is the Hornady SX bullet

the 223 is plenty for home defence, plus like posted above, the ammo is CHEAP, 308's are lots more $$$ to shoot, but they are a more stable bullet at longer distances due to their heavier weight.

223 use to be cheap,it's getting impossible to find some of it!I'm fixing to buy alot of brass and bullets and go back to home cooking! There's still some Wolf stuff at ok price but mil.ball ammo is going away for awhile.Looks like summer nights hanging out with the R/L press for entertainment! Can load alot of 223 with 8lbs. of powder and bulk of brass and bullets, lot less punishment tuning the loads than the 308.

Yes for "homeland defense" purposes I would go with the AR-15.

All the reasons above PLUS due to the size of the .223 vs. .308. You can carry alot more .223 ammo in a given space than .308 ammo.

IMO You just can't go wrong with a Bushmaster. My AK carbine has been awesome - no problems.

I'd feel better having a .308 in just about any combat-type situation, but the .223 does seem to make more sense in this case. As mentioned, you'll carry more weigh per round of the .308, and mags are difficult to find or replace. For a civilian who doesn't have Uncle Sam stocking gear for him/her, you'll need to get mags and gear wherever they may be, whether looted stores, fallen citizens/criminals/police officers, etc. You'll be lucky to find a 10 round AR-10 mag no matter where you look.

The .223 is also adequate for home defense and your average suburban treet battle. Unless you're against people in armored cars or high-level ballistic vests, the .308 would most likely be overkill. And you can always keep a few mags of SS109 handy (green tip).

Now, if I had some kind of home base and were living off the land, a .308 would have it's advantages with big game.

there is one caliber between the two that you may of over looked
and you can get it in an AR 15 that is of course the 7.62X39 .if ya all ready have a AR in .223 all you need is the upper parts , you can even mail order the parts and not do any paper work to get it . i have found that caliber works very well on deer and in many aspects it out shinesthe .223

There are lots of calibers between the two. DPMS makes .260's, .243's, and several other calibers.
