My boys are 11 & 12. Neither have trouble handling the recoil of the .243. I am not sure if you can add a larger stock. As for kids getting bored in the stand, they will. Do your best to make sure she will at least see a deer every now and then even if she doesn't pull the trigger.

Since you got yourself that Howa 1500, I bet your daughter would think it was really cool if you got her the Howa Youth Model.243. It's a really affordable piece, and looks like a pretty good rifle.

She already wants mine. Thats actually a pretty good idea. I know I could restock it later. Do you think a bolt action would be too much for a first gun ?

No, it's not too much gun. You'll be there with her, supervising and teaching. If you're worried about her forgetting that it holds more than one bullet, only give her one bullet at a time.

My daughter ig going to start hunting with me this year. She just turned 11. The deal is this year she sits in the stand with me. I just bought a 2 person ladder stand. If she can sit still and quiet and wants to keep hunting I'll buy her a rifle and she can do the shooting with me in the stand the following season. I thought about getting her a single shot break open in .243 but they are a little high for what you get I think. It looks like just about everyone makes a youth model in a bolt action. Will the action just drop into an adult stock ? I know it would be a short action. At least that way the rifle could grow with her.

Bought my boy a NEF Handi rifle in 243. Its perfect for him. Don't worry about it outgrowing her. You can buy longer stocks. If she ever outgrows it, you can trade it off too.

The 243 actually was too much for my 8 YO. the NEF is very light and has a very short barrel. The muzzle blast was significant enough to worry him. I have since reloaded some Youth loads for him and he loves it. I got the info from Hodgdon. 28.5 gr. H4895 with 85 gr. Nosler partition. Its recoil is more like a 223 now with very little muzzle blast. Perfect for a kid.
