They are to close to call. According to Hornady, If the both shoot a 150 grain bullet and both are zeroed at 300 yards, the 270 WSM will drop 9.7 inches at 400 yards while the 7 Mag will drop 9.9 inches.

Its so close that it only depends on whos ballistics you use. For sure, no critter would ever know the difference.

I just researched this a lot and ended up buying a 270 WSM !! I whitetail hunt mostly so I really compared 140 grain bullets from Federal, Winchester, and Remington ! The 270 wsm "on paper" shoots a little flatter and has a little more energy down range !! I don't know about the real world much but @300 yards my gun has less drop than my buddy's 7 mag...........but it's not a whole lot .....probably 2" of difference !! I think he was shooting 140's like me but he may not have been............I'll have to ask him !!

Also ask him what type of round was it? It could've been the same weight but that doesn't really mean much.

TheFederal catalog shows the .270 WSM shootsjust barelyflatter than the 7mm Rem Mag with an equal weight bullet. Note that the WSM does it in a short action.

Remington backs that up but the gap is even wider.
YES, you are correct. I have found the same thing. The 150 grain ballistic tip and 160 grain Accubond seems to fire the best. The Remmington Accutips look appealing also.

RE: 270 wsm is it flatter than a 7mm rem mag

You say a 270win can't out do a 7mm mag in trajectory? If your buying factory ammo you better start reading ballistics. Most 7mm mag ammo using a 150gr bullet isn't even hitting the 3000fps unless you buy the premium ammo. 270 in 130gr bullet standard ammo fly's 3050fps. So that being said its all a matter of what weight of bullet and how fast it's going. If your a reloader you can make both rounds into trajectory busters. As long as the accuracy is there. It's all about getting used to the cartridge and knowing the drops. You could shoot a 375 h&h at 400yds no problem as long as you know the gun.

270wsm pffffffffffffft short fat lil stubby. 130 gr 3217fps hmmmm I wonder if i should trade my 270win that's shooting 130gr 3288fpsfor it. I don't think so.

i looked at a box of 270 wsm's today and liked what i saw, but is it better than my 7mm mag?
NO, it isn't. At least, not if you load your own ammo for the 7 Mag. The 7 Mag. has two basic advantages overthe .270round: It holds more powder; it shoots larger-diamter bullets. Both of these work together to provide the potential for higher velocities with bullets of equal or greater ballistic efficiency. These factors work together to provide both a flatter trajectory and more down-range energy.

The ONLY advantage I see to the WSM or SAUM's is they can be used in a shorter action (lighter rifle). This is generally mox-nix to me, because I mostlyhunt with a single-shot anyway, so length of the round doesn't matter.

I'm not stuck comparing factory load data. The truth is that today's 7mm Rem. Mag. commercial loads have been "wimpified" to the point that they barely beat the 7X57mm Mauser! I can safely get 3350 FPS from my 26" Ruger No. 1 7mm Rem Mag. using 140-grain Nosler Partition bullets, and 3050 FPS with the 175-grain Nosler Partition bullets. I doubt that there are ANY commercial loads for the .270. 7mm, or .300 WSM's that will beat that 175-grainer for energy on target at 300 yards (2430 ft/lb). I zero this load to be +3.5" @ 100 yards. It hits +4" at 200, is dead on at 300, and is -9.5" at 400 yards. I can aim halfway up the chest of a broadside elk all the way out to 400 yards, and kill him with 1 shot. Since the rifle is a single-shot, this is the way I like it. For all smaller game, I use a single-shot 7X57mm Ruger No. 1A, unless I'm shoot ing my .73 cal. flintlock Jaeger!

I posted this about 2 weeks ago and nobody responded. So here it is agin, look at the new remington accutip 150 .270wsm. it says (if you believe factory numbers) that it only drops 28in at 500 yards. Now that is smoking if it true.

Thats with a 250 yd zero. Big difference with a 100 yd zero or even a 200 yd zero.

This is kind of a coin-flip comparison. When shooting bullets of about the same sectional density (130 gr. .270 vs. 150 gr. 7MM) they are about the same - a slight edge in trajectory to the .270 WSM. But in real world scenarios, there is very little difference in trajectory or thump - especially if you use premium bullets. Good campfire conversation material . . . . .

RE: 270 wsm is it flatter than a 7mm rem mag

Actually I just compared the balistics in the same weights and types of round. The 270WSM beats the 7 Mag in terms of fps and foot pounds of energy along with trajectory and wind drift naturally. Now if 270 WSM were more widely available and less expensive then 7mm Rem Mag, then it would be the logical choice. If you love the WSM action then the 270 WSM benefits the most over its predecessor 270 Win

RE: 270 wsm is it flatter than a 7mm rem mag

hmmm this is verry interesting but thats factory right what would happen if we handloaded both say shot 150 grainers i think we could get the 7mm mag to outperform the 270wsm. am i right? i just am haveing a hard time seeing that the 270 msm cant be beaten by the 7mm mag in 150 grain area theres no doubt that the 7mm kills the 270 wsm in heavier bullets i have seen listings for the 7mm mag just under 4000 fps i cant remember if it was 150 grain bullets or if it was 164gr but what do you guys think
