best short action round
i am looking for the "best" short action round, i live in iowa so really id only use it for a week a year here for the centerfire rifle deer season. however there is a good possibilty that i will be going on some other hunts for black bear and elk, and mabey pronghorn and mule deer. I have a browning a-bolt in 25-06, im looking at the 300wsm or the 325wsm, but im almost ready to get a 308 win and handload it up some, just for the conveiance of being able to go to wal-mart and get shells for it and shoot it real
cheap.wondering what recoil would be like on the 325 wsm in a browning micro a-bolt. thats my first pick so far, what do you all think? |

The 308 is the best, forget the WSM's they won't be around in 10 years.

I'd go for the .308 also. Or maybe a 7mm-08. In reference to the .308, why would you need to "handload it up some"? A .308 is good to go on whitetails out to 400 yards or so.

300 wsm would be my choice , they are very popular , and I believe they will be with us as long as we have guns .
The remington usm have not sold so they may fall by the wayside . |

ORIGINAL: Pighunter56 The 308 is the best, forget the WSM's they won't be around in 10 years. The micro is a few oz lighterplus shorter, so I wouldexpect the recoil to be more rapid and the barrel to jump more in it vs the regular abolt (medallion or hunter). I have not shot a 325 wsm but it will producemore then your 25-06, whether or not it will be tolerable only you can determine that. You already own a great antelope and deerrifle in the 25-06 rem, so look for a rifle that will meet your elk criteria. While the 308win is capable I would personally be looking at 3006 or 300's if you want to use the .308 diameter bullets. Since you seem to want a short action chambering the 300WSM seems like the logical step to take. Good luck |
