I have a .17 savage and a .17 pistol andme and my dad has both killed hogs and deer with ours.I shot a doe at about 75 yards and dropped her dead.

Theonly reason you didnt find them ground hogs because there were too many pieces.

I love my .17 fro everyhting

I hope not too.
There is a centerfire .17 Rem that would be legal here in WV as we can use any centerfire cartridge. But i'm not sure that is what Laramie is talking about since the post was about rimfire's

This is just my opinion. To me the .17hmr and machll are nothing but long distance rabbitt and squirrell guns.
Not suited for anything bigger, 17 gr of lead aint much.or even 20gr. A .177 pellet is around 17 gr. of lead.
So in essence all you have is a sub-sonic pellet gun.
The .22 Hornet is much better rifle and has been around for years, I cant understand why one would choose a .17 over it. the Hornet is flatter shooting with 45gr of lead, it cost more to shoot but it will lay the smack down on yotes or anything smaller. It is a little to much for rabbitts and squirrels, it rips them to pieces.
I have taken a few deer and hogs with my Hornet, its legal in my state. I have a NEF with a 3x9 Tasco.
I was shooting it yesterday from 20 to 120 yds with not much difference in trajectory, around an inch.I was shooting a home made spinner target made out of 1/4inch steel at a 100 yds. Using 45gr hollow points, my .243 was blowing right through the steel, the Hornet almost made it through, looked like someone started to drill through it with a 3/8 drill bit and stopped before going through it. Shot a 4x4 with it at 30 yds and it went through it like butter, even with the hollow points. You can hear the power in it. I shot at a can at point blank range, pointing the gun at it almost straight down, it blew the can straight up in the air about 20 ft andthe can looked like it was shot with a shotgun.
It's a nasty little round.

I would compare the 17 HMR to the 22 mag like this:

00-74 yards slight advantage to 17
75-125 yards-definite advantage to 22 mag.
125-200 yards 22 Hornet-this distance is too far for clean kills with 17HMR, and 22 mag.

We have an Anschutz 22 mag. that has accounted for untold numbers of ground hogs. The rifle is over 30 years old. We have shot two different HMR's-and have probably shot 60 or more hogs with it. The 22 mag. IMO is definitely a better choice.

If you have a 22 plinker, I would strongly suggest the 22 Hornet for hunting purposes. The only exception being as stated above, where I am sure DannyD is right. I do not hunt at night. Tom.

Well zrexpilot you have sparked my interest. I have been thinking about buying a 223 or 22-250. I don't know anyone in my neck of the woods that owns a 22 hornet. Will be checking them out. Good post back on his question, he may consider his options.

well it aint no .223 or .250 but it's neat and awsome little gun.
its makes 4/5 the power of a .222 with half the powder, that what I read anyways.
